Henri O’Connor, the son of an American father and a French mother was born in 1921 and grew up in Nantes, France. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Nantes and in the late 1930s, studied at the Beaux Arts, the Atelier de la Grande Chaumiere and the Academie de l’Arts et Publicite in Paris “He was basically one degree removed from all of the great masters of the turn of the century,” David Deitch, a freelance art curator in New York, says of O’Connor’s education. “His teachers were associates of Matisse, Derain — all of the big players at the time.” The curator says that the influences of O’Connor’s teachers, which reflect the Fauvist style in vogue at the time, is apparent in his paintings, particularly some of his later work. In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever. He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. Initialed lower left, 'H.S.' for Henrik Schouboe (Danish, 1876-1949) and painted circa 1915. Henrik Schouboe first studied at the Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-1901 and, from 1903-1910, in Italy and Paris. He was awarded numerous stipends and scholarships including the Larssen (1902-3) and the Akademie Scholarship in 1908. In 1906, he had exhibited for the first time at the Charlottenborg where his submitted entry was purchased by the leading Danish painter of the time, Kristian Zahrtmann, for his personal collection. Schouboe continued to exhibit both domestically and internationally for over thirty years and was the recipient of a variety of prizes, medals and juried awards including the purchase of his 1908 Charlottenborg entry, 'Young Couple in a Landscape', by the State Museum of Art for inclusion in the Danish national collection. Schouboe's work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including Copenhagen, Aabenraa, Maribo and the Aalborg Art Museums.
