Sara Stites Mixed Media

Sara Stites was born in 1955 and started drawing seriously at the age of 14 after attending a summer program at Indian Hill summer arts camp, in Stockbridge, MA. After attending other programs at Boston University and Carnegie Mellon University, she graduated with a BFA from Syracuse University and a Master's degree from Pratt Institute, where she studied with George McNeil, a great influencer. Stites worked in Houston in the 80s and was represented there by Hadler/Rodriguez, and Warren Hadler, who died, was a dealer as well as a mentor. There, most of her work was on large sheets of paper with three images interacting on a stage. Those successful years of productivity and sales ended with a move to Connecticut. The work continued to grow, and she eventually switched to oil paint on large canvases - also using organic abstract imagery. A move to the Florida Keys in the 90s was fruitful and work influenced by the tropical vegetation continued in oil on paper and directly on mylar and plywood. Stites rented a space in Miami to show her work and she hopes to spend more time there.
