Abstract Expressionist Figurative Dancer Welded Metal Sculpture Judith Brown
By Judith Brown
Located in Surfside, FL
Judith Brown, American "Reveler" Steel sculpture of a body in motion, dancer Signed with initials Initialed "JB" Base: 11" X 6" X 1.75" Sculpture: 16" X 10" X 10" Judith Brown (December 17, 1931 – May 11, 1992) was an American dancer and a woman AbEx sculptor who was drawn to images of the body in motion and its effect on the cloth surrounding it. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. "One of the things that made Judy stand out as an artist was her ability to work in many different mediums. Some of this was by choice, and sometimes it was by necessity. Her surroundings often dictated what medium she could work with at any given time. After all, you can't bring you're welding gear with you to Rome ."Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. Her style similar to Leonard Baskin and John Chamberlain. Figurative abstract expressionism. Brown's work was exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe, featured in group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, the Boston Arts Festival, The New Britain Museum of American Art, and many other galleries and museums. Brown's one-person exhibitions include shows at Zygos Gallery in Cyprus and Galeriea de Antonio Souza in Mexico City, as well as galleries and museums in Vermont, Florida, and New York City. Brown's artwork was also displayed in windows at Tiffany's and Bonwit Teller in their New York City department stores. In addition to displaying her work in exhibition settings, Brown received many public and private commissions throughout her career. Her public commissions may be found in many U.S. states including New York, Vermont, New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, and California; and she has work currently housed with several museums and corporations including the Pepsi Company, Marriott Corporation, Dartmouth College, Vermont Law School, Jewish Museum, and the Museum of Dance. • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
Elsa Peretti was a revolutionary jewelry designer and model who is known primarily for the work she did for Tiffany & Co. In an era of social upheaval, she reimagined diamonds as jewelry that working women bought for themselves rather than receiving from a suitor. She had her own boutique at Bloomingdale’s by 1972, and her partnership with the firm, which signed the venturesome and unorthodox designer to an exclusive contract in 1974, would cement her place in the lofty annals of jewelry legend. Peretti’s simple but sophisticated designs, such as the Teardrop collection and her minimalist Diamonds by the Yard necklace, helped establish a young audience for Tiffany’s offerings. Her visionary work elevated sterling silver, which was previously considered unsuitable for fine jewelry. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Tiffany & Co. pieces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024
What happened to Elsa Peretti was that she retired from her work as a designer in 2021 and then passed away later that year. After working as a model, the Italian-born Peretti moved to Manhattan in 1968 and became interested in jewelry design while furthering her modeling career. Through working with Halston, she became known to Tiffany & Co. She had her own boutique at Bloomingdale's by 1972, and her partnership with the firm, which signed the venturesome and unorthodox designer to an exclusive contract in 1974, would cement her place in the lofty annals of jewelry legend. In 1977, Peretti's designs earned the jewelry house more than $6 million. In some years, her work has accounted for 10 percent of the company's sales. Peretti signed a 20-year, $47.3 million contract with Tiffany & Co. in 2012. Find a diverse assortment of Elsa Peretti jewelry on 1stDibs.
