MCM Desk by Robert John Co. Walnut & White Painted Steel Frame & Laminate Top
By Knoll
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome Mid-Century Modern smaller writing desk by the Robert John Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featuring walnut cabinet with white painted steel frame and white laminate top. This is from their Steelwood collection. It desk is in wonderful restored condition. We have sanded and put a new finish on the walnut and the metal frame. The laminate has been cleaned and polished. There are still signs of age but nothing major. Please see photos, circa 1960s.
This wonderful Mid-Century Modern smaller size office desk has been a real puzzle. It has taken much research and I’m still not sure I know about the Robert John Co. from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their tag says Makers of Contemporary Furniture and that this desk is. When I google them all I come up with is other pieces of furniture being offered that were made by them, but I can’t find any history on the company. And, several listings say the piece was designed by Robert John but made by Knoll. I have not found supporting evidence of that statement! No matter. This is a fabulous desk with a walnut box cabinet containing three equal size drawers that are adorned with cool black and white handles. It is surrounded by a white painted metal frame which accents the walnut wonderfully and a white laminate work surface. This was originally in an architect’s office. I can see why. It has awesome lines and is beautifully designed. This desk is just the right size for a home office. Not as big as an executive desk but a little bigger than a writing desk. Fabulous! Fabulous style! Fabulous size! Fabulous condition! Make it yours.
Attn: Since originally writing this I have obtained three vintage brochures...

Butler's Desk or Walnut Secretary
By Brian Holcombe
Located in Princeton, NJ
A contemporary take on the butler's desk. A butler's desk is a cabinet that converts into a desk, concealing its function. A desk, standing on its own looks out of place without an accompanying chair and lamp, but a cabinet that functions as a desk looks fine all by itself.
This is entirely handmade, down to the desk hardware...

- Who owns Vista Alegre?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022While the company was originally founded in 1824, Vista Alegre has been owned by Portuguese conglomerate Visabeira since 2009. - Who invented California dial?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022The California dial likely originated in the 1930s because Californians loved mixing Roman and Arabic numbers. However, the style grew in popularity in the 1970s when refinisher Kirk Rich was tasked with creating California dial watch faces. You’ll find a range of California dial watches on 1stDibs.
- What is a California Watch Dial?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021A California watch dial is a clock face featuring half Roman numerals (generally for 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock) and half Arabic numerals (generally for 4 o’clock to 8 o’clock). A dash might replace the hours of 3, 6, and 9 — instead of the comparatively unexciting numerical representation — and an inverted triangle might be used to represent the hour of 12. On 1stDibs, find a variety of antique, modern and contemporary watches.
