William Grauer Landscape Drawings and Watercolors
American, 1896-1985
William C. Grauer (2 Dec. 1895-6 Apr. 1985) was a painter, muralist, and art teacher active in Cleveland for nearly 60 years.
Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art in 1914 and saw service in France during World War I.
Coming to Cleveland as a free-lance artist in 1927, he married Natalie Eynon (1888-1955), a fellow native Philadelphian and artist with whose career his own became intertwined. Invited to contribute murals to the President's Cottage at White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., in 1932, they returned to found and co-direct the Old White Art Colony, School and Gallery there during the summers from 1934-40. During the same period they also started the art department at Cleveland College of Western Reserve University. Grauer painted murals for the West Virginia exhibitions in both the Chicago Century of Progress (1933) and the New York World's Fair (1939). Residents of Ambleside Dr. near University Circle, the Grauers also maintained a summer home and studio in E. Claridon, Geauga County. They had 2 daughters, Blanche E. and Gretchen.
Following the death of his wife, Grauer married another Cleveland College art instructor, Dorothy Turobinski, in 1964.
He retired from WRU as associate professor of art in 1966 but continued to paint and to teach privately. Increasingly abstract in style in his later years, his work had been exhibited in 55 May Shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art.to

Following his World War I service in France, Grauer moved to Akron, Ohio where he opened a studio in 1919 with his future brother-in-law, the architect George Evans Mitchell. Soon, the Rorimer-Brooks design company, the developer Van Swerngen brothers, as well as the Sterling Welch and Halle Bros. department stores realized the extent of Grauer's talent and eagerly employed him. Grauer’s work during this time included architectural renderings for Shaker Square, Moreland Courts, and other many other projects commissioned by Cleveland architects. Grauer also remained true to his roots as a master designer of stained glass windows. With his work in such high demand, Grauer received a commission in 1921 to paint murals for the French Grill...

Ink and watercolor drawing by Carl Palme, dated 1921 and signed "CP," captures the narrow alleys of Positano. According to a note on the reverse, it is a study for an oil painting measuring 70x60 cm. Works from the early 20th century by Carl Palme are rare, making this piece particularly significant.
Drawing 20x24cm. With frame 34x36cm
Carl Adolf Palme (1879 – 1960) was a Swedish painter, draftsman, printmaker, and author. Born in Stockholm to bank director Henrik Palme and Anna Lavonius, he grew up on the Svalnäs estate, which is now a guest home and senior residence.
Palme's artistic education began in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (1900–1901). He then studied at Wassily Kandinsky's art school in Munich from 1902 to 1904. In 1907, he moved to Paris and became the first Swedish student of Henri Matisse. Palme was instrumental in founding the Académie Matisse, a collective of young Swedish and Norwegian artists who rented a large studio in Paris. Matisse visited weekly to critique their work. This group included notable artists such as Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, and Einar Jolin...

David Fredenthal (1914-1958) "View of New York from New Jersey,"7 x 10 inches. Watercolor on Paper, c. 1948. Signed lower right.
David Fredenthal (1914 - 1958) was one ot America's most respected watercolor artists. He was famous for his bold, intensely vigorous and complex paintings and drawings that expressed his deep feeling for excitement with life and living. He was a draftsman with seemingly a special gift for catching anything, physically and emotionally on the spot, and he never went anywhere without three or four loaded pens and a sketchbook in his pocket.
As part of the WPA project he executed a number of murals including the Sports Pavilion on the Heinz Building of the New York World's Fair 1939. Some of his fresco and mural techniques were inspired by his friendship with Diego Rivera who had admired and encouraged him in the early 1930's.
After he won a traveling scholarship to Europe from The Museum of Modern Art at age 19, he was the recipient of two Guggenheim grants in Painting. He had his first solo exhibition at the Downtown Gallery in New York in 1937 at age 23, and many others after that including the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1947.
Because of Fredenthal's prodigious drawing gifts, he was chosen by Erskine Caldwell to illustrate his novel "Tobacco Road...

Reginald Marsh (American, 1898-1954) Brooklyn Bridge, 1940, Signed and dated Reginald Marsh May 1940 (lr), Watercolor over traces of pencil on paper , 15 x 22 inches sight.
Reginald Marsh was born in Paris, France in 1898, the child of artist parents. He was born over a small cafe on Paris' Left Bank. He was brought to the United States in 1900 and was drawing before he was three. He studied art at Yale University and the Art Students League, during which time he worked primarily as an illustrator for New York newspapers and magazines. After studying in Paris in 1925 and 1926, he turned seriously to painting. In 1929 he was introduced to the egg-tempera medium, which he used extensively the rest of his life.
Marsh's gusto for painting the bottom crust of society contrasted curiously with his background. His parents, both well-known artists, were steeped in academic traditions. He attended Lawrenceville Academy and Yale; perhaps this elite background made it possible to paint the earthy people he did with a journalist's objectivity.
An admirer of Rubens and Delacroix, he disliked modernist art; indeed, his lifelong preoccupation was with people - enjoying themselves at beaches, at amusement parks, or on crowded city streets. Marsh was a second-generation Ash Can School painter and printmaker, best known as an urban regionalist. He spent his days sketching in small notebooks...

The dancing light and rapidly changing skies, hung high above the the landscape of West Cornwall: a harshly beautiful peninsula, jutting out into the wild tireless ocean, shaped and moulded by powerful salt laden Atlantic winds. Criss-crossed by ancient, tangled hedgerows marking the stories of the leathered, labour-roughened hands worn like the granite, coloured as the bronze bracken covered land they toiled endlessly to tame, carving spaces of sanctuary against the raw elements.
A plein air painting from the series 'Ebren ha Dor' (Meaning 'Sky and Earth in Cornish). In this series, Sophia's fluid expressive style captures the immediacy of the changing light in the seasonal landscapes, whilst exploring flux and balance in the nature of all things: The freedom of the air and solidity of the soil; Of human narratives written in the wild landscapes; in the sensual interplay of light and shadow. They capture an essence of the equilibrium between wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; and the enduring and the effervescent.

About The Artist
Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present.
'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’
‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'.
Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in prestigious international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago.
