Der Unternehmer Aurelio Zanotta gründete Zanotta im Jahr 1954 in Nova Milanese, Italien. Ursprünglich hieß das Unternehmen Zanotta Poltrona und war auf traditionelle Möbel spezialisiert. Anfang der 1960er Jahre hatte sich Zanotta jedoch einen Ruf für kantiges modernes Design aus der Mitte des Jahrhunderts erworben. Die heutigen Sammler von Vintage-Möbeln kennen die Marke vor allem für ihre innovativen und skulpturalen Stühle, Couchtische und mehr.
Einer der ersten Erfolge von Zanotta war der Mezzadro Hocker - besser bekannt als der Tractor Hocker - entworfen von Pier Giacomo Castiglioni und seinem Bruder Achille in den späten 1950er Jahren. 1965 gehörte Zanotta zu den ersten Möbelfirmen, die mit expandiertem Polyurethanschaum und rahmenlosen Konstruktionen arbeiteten, wie z.B. bei den Throw-Away Sofas und Sesseln, die von Willie Landels entworfen wurden. Ein weiteres beliebtes Design war der Blow chair - entworfen von Jonathan De Pas, Donato D'Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi und Carla Scolari - von vielen als physischer Ausdruck der sorglosen Kultur der späten 60er Jahre angesehen.
1969, inmitten der provokativen Bewegung, die wir heute Italian Radical Design nennen, erregte Zanottas Sacco Stuhl große Aufmerksamkeit . Der grenzüberschreitende Sitzsackstuhl wurde von den Designern Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini und Franco Teodoro entwickelt, die ihn Aurelio Zanotta als vorstellten, einen transparenten Vinylsack, der locker mit kleinen Styroporkugeln gefüllt ist. Er schlug das charakteristische bunte Leder vor.
Der Stuhl Sacco gewann 1970 den Preis ADI Design Museum's Compasso d'Oro. Im Jahr 1972 nahm das Museum of Modern Art in New York es in die bahnbrechende Ausstellung "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape", kuratiert vom Designer Emilio Ambasz. Im Jahr 2020 wurde er mit dem Compasso d'Oro ADI Lifetime Achievement Award für 50 Jahre anhaltende Beliebtheit ausgezeichnet. Es befindet sich heute in Museumssammlungen auf der ganzen Welt, darunter das Triennale Design Museum von Mailand, das Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris und das Londoner Victoria & Albert Museum.
Nach dem Tod von Aurelio Zanotta im Jahr 1991 blieb das Unternehmen in seiner Familie und wird seit 2002 von seinen drei Kindern geführt. Zanotta legt die Messlatte für Möbeldesign mit richtungsweisenden Stücken weiterhin hoch.
