This fabulous Georg Jensen sterling silver tazza features Jensen's iconic grape motif, a celebrated range of pieces which were inspired by the Art Nouveau aesthetic coupled with time the artist spent traveling in Italy. Georg Jensen was born in 1866 and trained as a sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1892. Jensen began his artistic career in ceramics and started working with silver in 1904. He went on to establish his own smithy in Copenhagen and like many others working during the Art Nouveau period, was strongly influenced by natural forms and structure found in flowers and plants. As mentioned above, Jensen spent time in Italy shortly after the turn of the century and developed an appreciation for ancient Roman silver work. He was also struck by the work of more recent Italian artists and was particularly influenced by those pieces which drew upon classical mythology, such as Baroque painter Caravaggio's 'Bacchus'. Jensen combined these influences with emerging Art Nouveau organic motifs, leading him to utilize the malleable qualities of silver to create his renowned Grape Collection. This handcrafted puffer salt Shaker and pepper mill showcase the skill and impeccable craftsmanship of Missiaglia's artisans. Each puffer fish features a hand-hammered dappled skein with an abundance of protruding conical spikes, as well as striated dorsal, tail and pectoral fins. Their whimsically refined faces offer stylized eyes consisting of concentric circular forms with a concave depression at centre, and an ovoid mouth with protuberant lips. The larger vessel holds pepper- artfully concealed within the body of the piece- which is ground by rotating the tail fin. An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Edwardian English sterling silver pepper grinders - boxed; an addition to our collectable silver collection. These exceptional antique sterling silver pepper grinders have a circular baluster shaped form. The surface of each pepper is plain and the lower portion is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting out of a ducal coronet a horse's head*. These impressive silver peppers retain the original hallmarked circular rounded covers, each surmounted by the functional sterling silver finial; this allows access to permit the grinder to be filled. The underside of each grinder retains the original serrated grille and horizontal securing bar. These exceptional Edwardian peppers are fitted to the original presentation box, with a satin and velvet lined interior and securing with a push fit catch; this box is a fine feature of the pair of peppers.
