Timor Island sculpted wooden traditional mask (circa 1970s) on contemporary metal stand. This is a traditional mask of a figure with male facial features and two holes as eyes and another for the mouth with a handle below the face. The island of Timor gave rise to a distinctive practice of creating traditional masks whose precise origins and significance remain uncertain. Portraying both male and female ancestors, they were held by men during dances and other ceremonies, including celebrations of victory in war. Carved sculptures and masks are specific to rural villages. Here the practice of animism, or nature-worship, is incorporated with the carving of ancestral statues and masks, which have a ritualistic function. New finds from Nikko Toshogu Shrine (UNESCO world heritage site) which is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu - the real SHOGUN himself, the founder of Tokugawa Edo Shogunate.
This low writing desk had been used at Nikko Toshogu's shrine office since Edo period, and was kept there with care till recently.
Fully made of premium quality Keyaki Zelkova wood, the top board is still almost flat.
The leg parts have engraved lines to flame the edge & around the hole, which is rare additional decoration for this type of writing desk. It means this piece is special.

108 years-old wooden small tansu (chest of drawers) with 4 drawers.
Finished with traditional Urushi lacquer. The original laquer remains well & gives a good wabi sabi touch.
Each handles are partly covered with Boro (hand-woven, indigo dyed cotton cloth) - this is another wabi sabi element of this tansu.
Smooth opening & closing operation for all drawers.
Product of Taisho 5 (1916), written on the bottom together with maker's address & name.
