Multicolor vertical stripes abstract geometric modern color field oil painting. The painting (similar to the work of Gene Davis and other Washington Color School artists), was proudly displayed in the living room of a Classic Mid-Century Modern house designed by a student of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Oil on canvas painting is signed Erik 74 on reverse also inscribed Erik Pitsokos. Measures 49 inches high,47.5 inches wide. Frame measures 51 inches high, 49.5 wide. In good condition.
From St. Petersburg Times - Sept. 12, 1975: The Greek-born sculptor Erik Pitsokos received his art education in Greece, Italy and Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1964 and became a Canadian citizen. In Canada he had an art school adjacent to his studio where he took only accomplished artists for highly advanced instruction in the finer points of sculpture. His entry at the International symposium of Arts held in Washington, D.C. in 1969 won him the first award for sculpture. He exhibited throughout Canada and his works have been donated to the purchased by individuals, galleries, public buildings and schools in Canada. Lee Reynolds Burr (1936–2017) opened his Vanguard Studios in Beverly Hills, California, in 1964 to make oil paintings an attainable decoration for any American household. With seascapes, nautical scenes, still lifes, bullfights, cowboys, pastoral views, hot-air balloons, horse races and abstractions, there was a Vanguard Studios creation to match any taste and interior.
Born in Los Angeles, Burr studied art at the University of Southern California. After graduating and a stint in the U.S. Army, he worked in a local studio as a painter before becoming a home decor entrepreneur with financial support from his mother.

powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010).
The expressive brushstrokes are typical for the style of Vijlbrief, connecting him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a great example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible piece. Signed in top corner and verso signed, dated and titled.
Ernst Vijlbrief, born November 25th, 1934, in Utrecht studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at the Academia di Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In the late fifties, after moving to Amsterdam in 1958, he painted in an expressive style, similar to CoBrA. In 1961 he took part in the large exhibition “Jongere Nederlandse schilders, beeldhouwers en architekten: Liga Nieuw Beelden” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Next to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an engaged board member of several artist associations, like the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional Association of Visual Artists). In 1973 he cofounded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht, with artist Bob Bonies. His work is held in collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Cobramuseum in Amstelveen, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and The Ferens Art Gallery UK. Vijlbrief died at the age of 76 in 2010.
