Born in Poland in 1942 as Armin Hagen Freiherr von Hoyningen-Huene, Peter Berlin is a relative of the celebrated fashion photographer George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968). Raised in Germany, Peter Berlin received post-secondary education as a photo-technician, and in his early 20s worked as a celebrity portraitist for German television. However, it was around this time that he curiously began designing and sewing his own skin-tight clothing which he would wear as he cruised the parks and train stations in Berlin, Rome, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. After several long-term stays on the east coast of the United States, Peter Berlin eventually moved to San Francisco in 1969, and became a fixture on the steep streets with his signature look and perpetual posing. He soon began producing films and starred in the now iconic “Nights in Black Leather” (1973), co-directed by Richard Abel. Berlin then produced, directed, and starred in “That Boy” the following year, and made four shorter films through the mid- to late-1970s, while publishing and selling his photographic self portraits. Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber's series, "The City" (2005-2013) moves indoors to a variety of architectural interiors that could be found in our own urban surroundings. While much of Nix and Gerber’s earlier work was grounded in personal experience, this series exists more in the realm of speculation. These public spaces lie deteriorating and neglected while nature slowly reclaims them. The reason for their decline is unclear, but the effects are not.
Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber have been making art collaboratively for over sixteen years. Originally from the American Midwest, now based in Brooklyn, they construct meticulously detailed model environments and photograph the results. For the last decade they have found inspiration in their urban surroundings, imagining a future mysteriously devoid of mankind. Originally trained as a painter, and then working as a collage artist, Marc Yankus began incorporating his own photographs into his artwork around 1999. However, when he did so, it marked a turning point in his career. In many of Yankus’ photographs, textures scanned from old tintypes, books, and other objects are digitally layered on top of the artist’s original images. The superimposition of the old and the new serves as an apt metaphor of Yankus’ wider conceptual interests. Throughout his work, the artist oscillates not only between the old and the new, the past and the present, but also between figuration and landscape. Establishing a rhythm and play between timeless portraits and beautifully still and quiet landscapes and cityscapes, Yankus’ achievement is a wonderful consistency of mood. Hushed, introspective, and at turns even melancholic, this body of work is ultimately a reflection of the artist’s personal past and his passage into the present time.

“During the research process for a prior series of photographs, I discovered two related facts about my family tree: a) Mary Bliss Parsons, my 8th great-grandmother, was accused of witchcraft in 1674 in Northampton, Massachusetts, and b) less than two decades later in 1692, my 10th great-grandfather, Samuel Sewell, presided as a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. One body of work came and went, but this ancestral coincidence stayed with me. What is a witch? Who does that word belong to—now?
“Major Arcana: Witches in America is a collection of portraits of women from across the United States who identify as witches. As early as 15th-century Europe, people condemned as witches faced a cruel fate: torture, and in many cases, death. Yet despite its history, recent decades have seen a reclaiming of the word ‘witch.’ In the mid-20th century, emerging pagan communities in the United States and Europe began embracing the term, and since then, ‘witch’ has been adopted by a diverse group of people.
“Major Arcana explores the various ways the notion of witch-ness belongs to those who claim it, representing the witch as a self-sought identity that both empowers and politicizes its bearer.
