Aegidius Sadeler or Aegidius Sadeler II[1] (1570–1629) was a Flemish engraver who was principally active at the Prague court of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor and his successors. Sadeler was born in Antwerp in the Sadeler family of print dealers and engravers. He was the son of Emmanuel de Sayeleer and the nephew of Aegidius I, Jan I en Raphael Sadeler.[2] He was trained by his uncle Jan I and became a member of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1589. He was active in Munich the next year in 1590, in Rome in 1593, in Naples and then again in Munich in 1594–1597. From 1597 he settled in Prague where he became court engraver for Rudolf II and made engraved portraits of notables and engravings after artworks there, most notably paintings by Bartholomeus Spranger, Roelant Savery, Hans von Aachen, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and sculptures by Giambologna and Adriaen de Vries. His early engravings were mostly faithful copies of works by Albrecht Dürer in the Imperial collection and copies of paintings by notable Italian painters such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Parmigianino, Barocci and Titian or by Northern painters who worked there, such as Paul Bril and Denys Calvaert. In Prague he also engraved portraits of the notables of Rudolf's court, and collaborated with Spranger, Joseph Heintz the Elder, Jacobus Typotius and his friend Anselmus Boece de Boodt (1550-1632), Rudolf II's gemologist and physician.[3] After Rudolf II died he enjoyed the favour and protection of the two succeeding Emperors, Matthias and Ferdinand II.[4][5] According to Michael Bryan...

My world was vivid technicolor, and no one ran faster than I did. I met and married the man of my dreams, and had the joys and exasperations of raising a family. And all of these events would have been the colors of my canvas if not for the happy opportunity of being able to spend some years in Japan. Japan is the perfect place to plunk down a New Yorker. While it races along on one level, there is this other part of Japan that forces you to hit the mental brakes until the images racing by slow down enough to actually be seen! Eastern thought is a well from which to draw the pure water that clears the mind and strengthens the soul. I've had the unbelievable pleasure of turning visions into realities, and of having those pieces of me scattered around the world. I'm thrilled that they've found so much acceptance in exhibitions, and I'm humbled at the thought that they hang on the walls of museums. But I have to say that I am most pleased when they speak so loudly to another soul that that person has to bring me home to continue our conversation for years to come. For the last 18 years, I've been a teacher, too. I have all the joys of being able to step back from what I do, and think through the principles I've recognized and the pathways I've wandered. And then to offer those insights to others to help them bring out their own mental images for the rest of us to share. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. He illustrated book covers for over 25 publishing companies, including Alfred A Knopf, Pocket Books, Popular Library, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, The Viking Press, and Random House. Over the course of his career, he illustrated over 600 book jacket covers. Hoffman graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1934 and then completed two years of post graduate study in Commercial Art from RISD. Marion Epstein (American, 1921-2002) Titania, 1973 Lithograph Framed: 31 1/2 x 25 x 1/2 in. Numbered, titled, signed and dated bottom For over 60 years, local artist Marion Epstein has worked through her art to bridge the personal and the political, family and career. A versatile and prolific artist, she has done sculpture, enameling, painting and photography. But it was printmaking that truly captivated her imagination. Like many artists of her generation, Epstein was powerfully influenced by the political activism of the 1960s. A member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Epstein recalls attending meetings out of town with her young son in tow. The anti-war movement influenced a number of her pieces. "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" echoes the sentiment of the popular anti-war folk song. This very tall print (6-by-2-1/2 feet) in tones of black, cream and ochre shows a tall woman (Marion) shielding a child, with spindly flowers drooping around them. "I didn't do abstractions," says Epstein. "I was always trying to say something." Another anti-war piece, "Generations of Thy Children," combines oil painting and collage on a bisected canvas. On the right half, a lone figure of a Vietnamese child stands forlornly on a reddish orange background. The left side of the canvas is crowded with images of soldiers, artillery and politicians. Epstein's print "Metamorphosis," completed following her participation in a civil rights march in Washington, tries to capture the changes and uncertainty in America during that time. In the background a white man looms with a questioning, almost fearful look on his face while the black youth in the foreground has his eyes downcast. Works such as "Dream Deferred" and "Aching To be Free" also represent the artist's personal reflections on the struggle for racial equality. Much of Epstein's art is a complex layering of imagery and texture, line and translucent color. In her haunting print, "Ovens and Shoes," one of several works in which she addresses the Holocaust, she makes interesting use of photographic images from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Over a saturated black print of the death camp ovens, she has superimposed a pale ochre print of the pile of discarded shoes. After studying Architecture at Liceo Artistico, she graduated with Hons in Painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice in 1995. Her final thesis was on G. Klimt and the Wiener Secession, under supervisor Luca Massimo Barbero. Today, she lives and works in Padua, where she dedicates herself to painting and priniting techniques, such as linocut and woodcut. He was born on Jan. 5, 1950, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Charles Wilbur “Will” Engelland and Patricia Fairman Engelland.. Tim grew up in Terre Haute, IN, attending Fairbanks Elementary School and Indiana State University’s Laboratory School. He knew he wanted to be an artist from an early age, and was mentored by Lab School’s John Laska, graduating in 1968. He received a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art; was a Norfolk Fellow at Yale University; and received his MFA from Cornell University, teaching there for two years after graduation. He spent the majority of his career, from 1976-2004, at Deerfield Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Deerfield, Mass. There he taught art and photography, coached basketball and lacrosse, and served as faculty resident. When the school began accepting female students, Tim designed The Deerfield Girl, a bronze statue to accompany The Deerfield Boy statue standing in the school’s Memorial Building. Along with John O’Brien and Peter Fallon, Tim founded the Deerfield Press, publisher of limited-edition illustrated poems and stories; James Dickey, John McPhee, and Seamus Heaney are among the authors whom the Press published. For several decades, Tim served on the faculty at the Advanced Placement Summer Institute in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and as a consultant to the College Board. He spent sabbaticals in New York City and Boston, and he has exhibited in galleries in those cities and many other venues. His work can be found in the National Library of Ireland, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and in private collections worldwide. In 2004, Tim returned to Indiana.
