Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Invitation to the Paradise #11
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Sakurai Takami - Japanese (1928-2016)
Title: Invitation to the Paradise ST#11
Year: circa 1972
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Sight size: 18 x 24 inches.
Framed size: 21 x 27 inches
Signature: Unsigned. Label on old frame
Condition: Very good
Frame: Framed in original frame. Frame in poor condition
This oil on canvas is by the noted avant garde Japanese artist Sakurai Takami (1928-2016). It was created sometime between 1971, when Takami lived in San Francisco and was a member of and exhibited with the “Konnyaku Commune” and 1978 when he exhibited with the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco. This painting was purchased from the Vorpal Gallery. The painting is in very good condition. It is unsigned, but the title is on the side of the metal frame. The frame is fine, but the mat is stained and in poor condition. I will include the frame for protection and provenance.
Sakurai was a main member of the avant-garde art group “Kyushu-ha”. Kyushu-ha” created a major trend among contemporary art in post-war Japan, which spread from Fukuoka to the whole country and also France, the United States and other overseas countries. Throughout his life he was very dramatic; his enormous and diverse works are energetic and face us with the true meaning of expression. Initially his main focus was on informal paintings, but it gradually expanded towards anti-artistic objects and performances. His works are characterized by the usage of materials that are connected with the smell of a workers life, such as coal tar, asphalt, woven mats and dungarees (jute bag).
Shortly after Kyushu-ha disbanded in 1968, Sakurai Takami moved to San Francisco. From 1973 onward, he lived in France. The people and faces in Sakurai’s paintings are coloured red, so that the colour, a symbol of heat, becomes a “social sign”. Each person has a life of their own, while at the same time expressing the colourful life of human communities, like the hippies.
His theme may be drawing “humanity and the universe” with a loving embrace of “peace” and “life”.

Tanzanian artist Julius Njau was born in 1961 Marangu, Moshi in Tanzania. He attended the Primary School Kilimanja. The first works of Njau are very representative, inspired by the nature and the traditional aspects of his country. In 1984 his technique changed and his style transformed. Julius Njau paintings are characterised by the interaction of primary colors and the mixture of forms. Julius Njau's artworks works are part of the collection of Osaka Prefecture and Toyama Museum of Modern Art in Japan. They are also in the Frankfurt Museum of Ethnology (fur Volkerkunde), in the ZAK Gallery (Zeitgenossische afrikanische Kunst), Furth in Germany, in the Amos Anderson Helsinki Gallery, Finland, and in the 5th British Museum in England. The image size is 17.5 x 22.85 inches, framed size is 27.35 x 32.5 inches. Custom framed in a oak frame, with light brown matting. It is in excellent condition
About the artist:
Born in Trenton, New Jersey, 1946 Interested in art from the age of 7, Christopher Forrest still speaks fondly of a set of colored pencils presented to him then by his parents; At 11, he won his first award for painting and started exhibiting in galleries. Along with his interest in art grew a keen attraction for the outdoors and the wildlife which thrived there. After considering schooling in art, Chris chose to study civil engineering. Upon graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Chris began a career as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Army provided Chris the opportunity to observe wildlife from the swamps of Florida to the lakes of Quebec, in addition to Europe and Viet Nam. In 1973, the Army sent Chris to graduate school at North Carolina State University, at this time Chris started to paint wildlife. Chris resigned from the Army in 1978 and took a position as an artist with Evergreen Publishing Co. He has produced more than thirty original graphic editions for Evergreen. His original graphics are handled by some 350 galleries in North America. He is currently General Manager at Evergreen. His work and articles about his work have appeared in numerous wildlife and art publications. Chris strongly believes in wildlife conservation and is a member of many conservationist organizations. His donated prints have raised a great deal of money for Ducks Unlimited, Newjersey, Audubon and Ward Foundations. In 1980 he realized one of his major professional goals. He was elected to membership in the Society of Animal Artists. "Creating a painting or graphic is an exciting adventure and challenge for me. Starting with the observation of the animal in the wilderness, I then approach the painting with the attitude that it will be my finest work." Monotype
By Marvin Lipofsky
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Monotype" 1991 is an original monotype by renown American glass sculptor Marvin Lipofsky. It is signed, titled and dated in pencil by the artist. The artwork size is 30 x 22.5 inches, framed is 33.75 x 26.25 inches. It is custom framed in the original wooden off white frame. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
Glassmaker, sculptor and graphic artist, Marvin Lipofsky, born in 1938, received his B.F.A. degree in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois. He earned his M.S. degree, 1963, and M.F.A., 1964, in sculpture from the University of Madison, Wisconsin. There, he was one of Harvey Littleton's first graduate students working in glass.
Littleton had been the first American artist, in the 1960s, to visit Czechoslovakia, famous for its work in glass, where glass sculpture had been made since the 1950s. Marvin Lipofsky would also be an early visitor, observing there. Since that time, the artist has traveled extensively, collaborating with the world's best glass artists.
After graduation from Wisconsin, Lipofsky was hired by the University of California, Berkeley, where he introduced the second university glass program in America (Littleton was the first). Lipofsky also established the glass program at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1967, the San Francisco area becoming a center for glass in the 60s and 70s because of his own work and the students produced by his teaching.
While Lipofsky may be best known for three-dimensional globe forms, he has indulged himself in the making of glass Pop Art pickles and hamburgers. He has also created multi-colored, irregular flower...
