Silver and sepia tone photographic print of an indigenous spearfisher by Edward Sheriff Curtis, image circa 1901 (American, 1868-1952), as a 1974 copy of (and printed from negatives derived from) the original Edward Curtis copper gravure plate, by Jean-Antony du Lac (1929-2002). Curtis used a process he mastered of creating orotones, which are photographs on glass, which Jean-Anthony du Lac spent years mastering. Jean-Antony du Lac's work is considered that of a preservationist. Titled lower left, signed lower right. Presented in an aluminum frame with anti-glare glass. Paper size: 20"H x 15"W Born in France and raised in New York City, Jean-Anthony du Lac moved west to San Francisco in 1957. Jean was an accomplished photographer whose published credits include Life Magazine and the San Francisco Examiner. He spent many years reproducing Edward S. Curtis' images of North American Indians; and he mastered the process of creating orotones, which are photographic reproductions on glass. Cy Twombly gained fame for his art that combined cultural, historical, and poetic elements—particularly those from classical antiquity—with abstract shapes and his distinctive script. Born Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr. on April 25, 1928, in Lexington, Virginia, he began his artistic journey under the guidance of Pierre Daura and Marion Junkin at Washington and Lee University. This initial training was complemented by his formative experiences at the Arts Students League of New York and Black Mountain College, where he established enduring friendships with influential figures like Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham. A pivotal moment for Twombly was his 1952 trip to Italy and North Africa with Rauschenberg, funded by a grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This journey allowed Twombly to engage deeply with the rich cultural history that would inform his future artistic endeavors, leading to the creation of significant early pieces. States of America is the photographic legacy of one of the UK’s leading photographic talents whose untimely death in 1991 ended prematurely the highly promising career of a distinctive and powerful photographic voice. Michael Ormerod was born in Cheshire in 1947. He lived in Newcastle, but spent many years travelling America. Fascinated by the American image, and following in the footsteps of Robert Frank, Ormerod took to the American West to find a washed out dream of capitalism. His images capture a strange juxtaposition of an American beauty tainted by a hidden sense of menace and corruption. The photographs are understated, but show an unseen America, where the industrial heartland is decaying, highways stand empty and towns are deserted. The subjects of Ormerod’s work are the disenfranchised.
