Pair of French Louis XVI Style Silvered Bronze Chenets, circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze. Each finial has two pots au feu of different sizes and orientation adorned with a laurel swag. The larger fire pot...

Period French Louis XVI Giltwood Firescreen, circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace. The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving. These elements are surrounded by slightly spiral gadrooning. Beneath the crest is a repeating laurel leaf motif that runs all the way around the border. The ornamentation is double sided. Louis XVI firescreens...

Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
An exceptional pair of 18th century English Rococo gilt bronze andirons or fire dogs. The bold shape of these andirons relate to designs of Thomas Johnson (1714–1778), one of London's pioneers of the 'Modern' or French style, later known as Rococo. In the 1750s he published several books of designs which were widely used for things like ceiling moulding. These books include 12 Girandoles in 1755, The Book of the Carver in 1758 and monthly between 1755 and 1758, 150 New Designs.
