Nordic Winter Landscape, Oil on Canvas, Signed, Early 20th Century

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

Nordic winter landscape with low growing pines and spruces rising from softly undulating snow covered ground and rocks. In the distance, dark forests and snow clad mountains emerge along the horizon beneath a pale blue sky. Executed with expressive brushwork and a restrained yet luminous palette, the painting captures the stillness and clarity of the Scandinavian winter. Oil on canvas mounted on board, signed John Öhwall. John Öhwall (1883–1957) was a Swedish painter best known for his realistic and atmospheric depictions of the Nordic landscape, particularly scenes from Bohuslän and Skåne. His art is characterized by vigorous brushwork, restrained yet expressive coloration, and a strong sensitivity to seasonal light and the quiet monumentality of the Scandinavian countryside. Öhwall was born in Skåne, and initially trained as a decorative painter before turning to fine art. In 1903 he began his artistic studies under the influential Swedish painter Carl Wilhelmson in Gothenburg, whose teaching had a lasting impact on his artistic development. Between 1908 and 1914, Öhwall undertook extensive walking journeys through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and Italy while pursuing independent artistic studies. During this period he also studied for an extended time at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and at Chrakovsky’s painting school in Rome. During the war years, from 1914 to 1917, he periodically continued his studies at Wilhelmson’s painting school in Stockholm. In the early 1920s he permanently settled on the Swedish west coast, a region that would provide inspiration for many of his most important landscape paintings. Öhwall made his debut as an exhibitor at Gummesons Konsthall during the 1910s, followed by solo exhibitions in Gothenburg, Oslo, and Norrköping. Together with Tor Otto Fredlin...

Summer Landscape with Farmhouse and Horses, Impressionist Drawing

Summer Landscape with Farmhouse and Horses, Impressionist Drawing

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

This summer landscape with horses grazing in a paddock under the rays of the sun beside a rural farmstead is a finely executed drawing in brown, signed lower right by Swedish female artist Ester Almqvist (1869-1934). A winding path leads the viewer into the composition, where buildings, fences, and vegetation define a cultivated countryside. Two horses stand quietly within the enclosed field, their forms rendered with spare yet assured lines. Above them, the sun shines from a clear sky, its rays spreading outward in rhythmic, hand-drawn strokes that cover all of the sky. The composition is built through a lively and vibrating pen line, where hatching and linear repetition create both texture and luminosity. The warm sepia tone unifies the scene, while the expressive draughtsmanship conveys a sense of immediacy and presence. The motif is elevated through a distinctly personal interpretation of landscape and light. Ester Dorothea Almqvist was born in 1869 in Bromma, Stockholm and died in 1934 in Lund, south Sweden. She emerged as a significant figure in Swedish art at the turn of the twentieth century, initially associated with the National Romantic movement, before later contributing to the introduction of modernist tendencies in Sweden through a highly individual synthesis of Neo Impressionist and Expressionist elements. Her early life was shaped by a religious and intellectually engaged environment. Almqvist lived her entire life with a physical disability caused by a spinal deformity, which limited her mobility but did not prevent her from pursuing an artistic career. Following her mother’s death, Almqvist broke with her earlier environment and relocated to Skåne, where she would spend the greater part of her professional life. The landscapes of southern Sweden became central to her artistic production and provided the basis for many of her most characteristic works. Her artistic education began at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm (1888–1891), where she received foundational training in drawing and design. She continued her studies through private lessons with the history painter Gustaf Cederström, but chose not to apply to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Instead, she pursued further training at Valand Art School in Gothenburg, where instruction was led by prominent artists such as Carl Larsson and Richard Bergh. She also studied for a period at the Konstnärsförbundet’s school (Artists' Association), under the guidance of Per Hasselberg and Bruno Liljefors...

Collector´s Study, Interior Oil on Canvas, Signed, 1912, Neoclassical Style

Interior scene from a study or collectors room signed and dated with monogram "HNH 1912", Hans Nikolaj Hansen (1853-1923) presenting a quiet yet intellectually charged space. In the foreground stands a writing desk furnished with an inkwell and a book, objects that suggest reflection, scholarship, and artistic contemplation. Beyond the desk, set against a deep red wall, rises a large neoclassical sculpture whose pale surface contrasts with the warmth of the interior. The composition balances intimacy with monumentality: the scholar’s table before us, the silent authority of antiquity behind. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting reveals Hansen’s characteristic sensitivity to historical atmosphere. Hans Nikolaj Hansen was a Danish painter and Illustrator, born in 1853, the son of wine merchant C.J.A. Hansen and Sophie. After graduating in 1872 from Borgerdydskolen on Christianshavn, he followed his early artistic inclination and enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, completing his studies in 1877. He debuted the following year with the historical painting "Uden for Sigbrits Port", before travelling to Paris where he continued his education under the influential French painter Léon Bonnat. The Parisian training left a lasting imprint on his painterly discipline and compositional clarity. He also stayed in Rome for a time where he painted numerous historical and genre works. His art is distinguished by originality, narrative imagination, and a keen sense for historical character. Hansen achieved his greatest recognition as an illustrator and graphic artist. His illustrations for Gaffelen by Johan Herman Wessel...

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

View from Højbro Plads in Copenhagen on a winter day by Axel Möller (1862–1958), signed and dated “Axel Möller 26”, oil on canvas. The motif is taken from where Højbro Plads meets Højbro Bridge which connects with Slotsholmen Island over the Slotsholmen canal, the Nikolaj Kirke is rising in the background. In the foreground, two women wearing green skirts stand on the snow covered square. Several figures are crossing the bridge, and the church tower forms the central vertical element of the composition. The painting is presented in a contemporary gilded profiled wooden frame. Axel Möller was a Danish painter born in 1862 and active well into the 20th century. His work concentrated on urban environments, everyday street scenes, and the seasonal character of Copenhagen. Profile Portrait of a Woman, 19th Century Charcoal on Paper, Signed

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

A graphite profile portrait drawing of a woman on paper by Johannes Collin (1873-1951), signed “Johannes Collin 98” and titled “Zigenerska”. This early and unusual work by Collin presents his interest in refined drawing and capturing character even at a modest scale. It dates from 1898, a formative moment for the artist when he was studying arts and stands out as a somewhat rare example of his graphic or drawing work rather than his better known small bronzes. Johannes Collin was born in 1873 in Skåne, south Sweden. After passing his matriculation at the Cathedral School in Lund in 1892, he studied at university in 1894–96 and then turned to art studies. From 1899 to 1901 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and from 1903 to 1905 he studied sculpture in Paris. Collin settled in Lund, Skåne and pursued a career as sculptor and poet. He died in 1951 in Lund. He was the son of a farmer and raised in the Skåne countryside. Early on he developed a sensitivity to form, figure, and expression, combining his sculptural ambitions with literary leanings (he later published a small volume of poetry). Collin appears to have had an individualistic personality: he moved in student and artistic circles in Lund, but also kept a modest, sometimes even eccentric public persona. In the mid-1930s, he increasingly turned to poetry and pared back his three-dimensional work. From his early years, he gradually developed into a sculptor working in bronze and patinated materials. Much of his work consists of small‐scale bronzes with an intensity of expression. One critic (in Kulturens yearbook) wrote of Collin that “the monumental is not in the work’s external dimensions but in the attitude … your small sculptures have an inner monumentality”. Collin exhibited his works in various venues: for example he took part in the Lund Exhibition (“Lundautställningen”) in 1907. Internationally, he showed works in Munich in 1909 and 1913, where his efforts were positively reviewed. A noteworthy retrospective or exhibition was held at the museum Kulturen in Lund, when a donation of Collin’s sculptures...

Landscape with Poplar Trees, Expressionist Oil on Panel, Signed, 1940s, Framed

Located in Stockholm, Stockholm

A vibrant painting depicting an avenue lined with poplar trees in fall colors, prominently featuring a very large, centrally placed yellow poplar. Possibly an American poplar. The artist, Agda Holst, has employed a diverse palette of colors to the poplars, creating a dynamic and colorful composition. This oil on panel is signed and dated by Holst in 1948. The work exemplifies her use of color and form, characteristics that defined her artistic practice throughout her career. Agda Holst was a Swedish modernist painter known for her precise study of form, stylized compositions, and ability to merge structured geometry with expressive color. Her works, often still lifes, portraits, and figure studies, reflect a balance between naturalistic representation and modernist influences such as Cubism and New Objectivity.
