Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. Gold is often the empty space that suggests and/or conceals. The juxtaposition of incongruent things invites in story and poetry rather than contractions. The spirit of Majio’s aikido practice was alive much later in dancing Argentine tango, which is present in the small gold icon pieces of tango paper dolls.
In Dolly with Three Dots, gold metallic paint on wood surrounds the embrace of Argentine street tango dancers witnessed by an innocent girl-child from the 1920s. It highlights a gap in time and culture. In one country this dance is common, while in another perplexing.
