The original piece is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was exhibited at the Met's "26th Annual National Exhibition of Advertising and Editorial Art" in 1947, and then again at the 1950 exhibition titled "20th Century Painters: A Special Exhibition of Oils, Water Colors and Drawings Selected from the Collections of American Art in the Metropolitan Museum". Kipp Stewart (American, b. 1928) is an artist, architect, and designer from Pennsylvania. Known to furniture obsessives for the Declaration series he codesigned for North Carolina’s Drexel Furniture, Stewart is most commonly associated with mid-century design movements of his adopted home state of California. There, in 1972, Stewart designed the Ventana Big Sur, a luxury resort near Montecito for which he oversaw architecture, planning, furniture and interior design across 160 acres of land.
By the time Stewart spearheaded the Ventana, he was already well versed in furniture design. After briefly serving in the U.S. Navy as a teenager, Stewart enrolled at the Chouinard Art Institute (present-day Cal Arts) in Los Angeles. By the time he graduated, he was steeped in the world of modern seating design, experimenting with new chair models that bridged form and function. Charles and Ray Eames were important influences on his early work, which included a chrome-framed lounge chair whose reclined shape bears a striking resemblance to the Eames iconic lounge.
In the late 1950s, Stewart partnered with another West Coast furniture designer, Stewart MacDougall, on a line of modern furniture for Drexel. (The pair were also producing case pieces and more for Glenn of California.) Drexel soon unveiled Stewart and McDougall’s Declaration line, which was constructed entirely of natural walnut and featured the choice of white porcelain or brass drawer pulls and cabinet door handles...

Landscape painter. Born in Marianna, Arkansas on April 12, 1893. Bickerstaff was a self-taught artist except for a brief period at the Art Institute of Chicago. He led a peripatetic existence before moving to California in 1922. His early years were spent in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Van Nuys.
He exhibited often in the latter with Paul Lauritz. A prolific oil painter of mountain and desert scenes, his landscapes often include eucalypti as well as rolling hills of California wildflowers...

Glowing Wave Crashing at the Shore - Seascape

Highly detailed seascape by William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930). A wave crashes at the shore, glowing from the sun shining through. Above the wave, a few gulls glide across the scene. The rocks in the foreground and the cliffs in the midground are finely textured, adding a lovely sense of realistic detail.

William Henry Blackman (American, b. 1930) was born in San Diego, CA in 1930. He spent most of his early years in West Los Angeles. Blackman began painting at age 12. In high school he majored in art so he could experiment with various mediums to find ways to interpret his ideas. In December of 1948 he joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii. He studied at Woodbury College where he learned advertising and graphic arts.
In 1960 he bought a home with his wife Shirley in the San Fernando Valley and worked as an advertising manager. His position put him in contact with art directors and they would lunch together and then visit various art galleries in the area. He began oil painting again as a hobby.
In 1964 he made an important contact through an associate at his agency. This person was a vice-president at Aaron Brothers Galleries and purchased paintings for them. They had showrooms in various major cities and sold original framed paintings to art galleries and furniture stores. He said they could possibly sell some of his seascapes so Bill began painting in his spare time. Gradually, they sold more than he could produce so Bill made the decision to leave the advertising business and devote his time to painting. In 1965 the Blackman's moved to Thousand Oaks, California. He began his career as a fine artist and to this day resides in Thousand Oaks. Pictographs and Symbols Rain Dance Taos Society of Artists Taos New Mexico

Charles C. Stewart (1922-2011) was born in Toledo, Ohio. From an early age he had a natural talent for the arts, so much so that during his school years, his teachers encouraged him to take classes at the Toledo Museum. He studied there for eight years.
During World War II, he served with the tank destroyers in five campaigns. When he returned from the war, he studied art and sculpture at the Art Student's League in New York. He then went to Mexico for eight months to study and paint. While in Mexico, he fell in love with the country, its people and arts, vowing one day to return and live.
In 1947, Stewart moved to Taos, New Mexico to start his career. He opened a frame shop and small studio and studied at the Taos Valley Art School under Louis Ribak. In 1949, he opened his own gallery. He taught art and sculpture at the Taos Art Association and at Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well as teaching private students. He built three homes in Taos, the last of which is known as the "Stewart House." The "Stewart House" was written up in the New Mexico Magazine in an article entitled "The House That Chuck Built" by Tricia Hurst
