Now More Choices, Wall St., New York
By Haik Kocharian
Located in Hudson, NY
These photographs are Dye Sublimation Prints. Framing options available. "Surfing Color" presents photographs that are abstract creations born from realism. Kocharian emphasizes the ambient color in the tradition of minimalism, observing the beauty and mystery of light, shadows, tone, and moods. The environments within the photographs are transformed into ones of symbolism, challenging the viewer to question the images. As a result, a tension is created, like an energy trapped in a frame attempting to escape. Kocharian, who is also a filmmaker, brings a cinematic eye to his photography, as we experience images that reflect simplicity through his focus on light, color, and the documentation of ordinary life. In “Going Home,” Los Angeles a pool-like shadow on the foreground alters the nature and surrounding of the image as light breaches from the center of the bike during sunset. “Blue Highway”, Nevada leads the viewer into the deep blue of early dawn and draws them into a new beginning. His influences in these photographs include artists such as Mark Rothko and photographer William Eggleston, as Kocharian uses color, texture, geometry, and shapes to tell a story that evokes contemplation and introspection. Born in Armenia, Haik Kocharian was introduced to the world of art in his early childhood by his parents, who were theater and film actors. He began his studies at the Armenian Theater Academy and continued his education in film at Brooklyn College, where he also studied photography. Kocharian resides in New York City. In 2015, Kocharian released his first feature film, "Please be Normal," starring Oscar-nominated actor Sam Waterston. The film was nominated for a Critic’s Pick in the New York Times and won awards at two film festivals. Kocharian is actively involved in charity work and, as a photographer, he has collaborated with many non-profit organizations in the U.S. and abroad such as Village Health Partnership in Ethiopia and Meaningful World, a UN-affiliated NGO in Burundi, Kenya, and Rwanda. He has exhibited his works within galleries in New York such as Galerie Mourlot, Robin Rice Gallery, 92 Y Tribeca, and James Cohan Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at the Museum of the City of New York and the International Center for Photography. Kocharian was also a finalist in the Smithsonian Magazine Photo Competition. This is his third solo show at the Robin Rice Gallery. Store Window. Marfa, TX
By David Saxe
Located in Hudson, NY
David Saxe - “Photography has always been the simple act of looking and being inspired to strip the unnecessary elements from the scene and frame the image down in a way to discover what is not apparent on the surface. My photographs are as much about me as what I am seeing: In Southern California, 2010 is a perfect example of this process of seeing. When I first noticed this scene, it was a simple mural of a whale on a wall. After looking at it for a while I realized that by eliminating the sky and foreground from the image the whale now had an undulating rhythm and movement. In another image Restaurant Hostess, Palm Beach, FL 2012, I would go to this restaurant every week and sit in the bar behind the reception area. One day, I turned around and saw the back of a woman. Through this process of deductive framing, the image became one of dark shadows rhythmically trickling down her back interwoven with the tattoo of the lizard. David Saxe was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada in 1943 and studied fine art at l’ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal. He started taking pictures in 1970, after being influenced by the work of Robert Frank, and Henri Cartier Bresson. About 10 years ago, he decided to take a workshop with Constantine Manos...

"Martha Stewart Living Magazine, Baking Pans", New York, NY, 1999
By Jose Picayo
Located in Hudson, NY
This photograph is printed on Japanese Paper. The price is for an unframed photograph. The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to announce, 25 Years of Polaroids, a new exhibit by Jose Picayo. The opening reception will be held Wednesday, November 7th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The exhibit will run through January 6, 2019. In this exhibition, Picayo seeks to revive the concept of unadulterated beauty captured as a single moment in time. An unapologetic user of film, Picayo prides himself on his avoidance of digital processing for personal work. When asked why it remains his preferred medium, Picayo answers, “Digital is so overpoweringly real; photography is more magical to me.” For Picayo, Polaroid film is a medium where he can capture something as is – a moment in time. Just to hold the photograph in his hands is enough. 25 Years of Polaroids showcases Picayo’s most iconic work. This exhibit includes personal photographs of Cuba from 1994, Polaroid image transfers showcasing his impressive use of visual texture and his eye for fashion. Also included are his Atget-esque tree portraits from a New Jersey public arboretum in 2012. Additionally, a selection of 8” x 10” Polaroids from Mugshots 2008, will be included, exploring how a person’s soul can be captured in what appear to be basic photographs. The main questions at the heart of Picayo’s photography stem from the mystery of human perception and the precious things that are lost to time. The invitational image, Rotating Doll, 1997, features a multi-paneled display of polaroids which cover an entire length of a wall. These 20” x 24” Polaroids appear larger than life and were given much praise in Picayo’s recent exhibit Polaroids 2016 at The Erie Museum in Erie, PA. This series stems from a collection of children’s dolls Picayo has found over the years, each one with its own strange and authentic story to tell. By cultivating a deteriorated look reminiscent of antique fresco painting, Picayo examines time using the inanimate faces of broken dolls, reflecting on the objects we hold dear and how they fall apart as we try to hold onto them. Picayo speaks of his own influences, crediting photographers Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, and Edward Curtis, Michael Disfarmer, and Torkil Gudnason with impact on both his fine and commercial art. He is well known for his work in fashion, but for Picayo his personal and commercial work are interrelated, each extensions of one another. Born in Cuba, Picayo immigrated to Puerto Rico during his childhood and settled in New York City by the early 80s. After receiving his BFA from Parsons School of Design, Picayo began his professional career as a commercial photographer, shooting for magazines such as Vanity Fair, Sassy, Taxi, and Connoisseur. Picayo’s work has since appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, L.A. Style, New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rolling Stone, NY Magazine, HG, and Elle Décor. Picayo has held nine solo exhibits to date at the Robin Rice Gallery. still life, baking pans...

Tulips 1:57AM, Paris
By Leonardo Pucci
Located in Hudson, NY
The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present Flowers, a photographic exhibition by Leonardo Pucci. Flowers is Pucci’s second solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery. Paralleling his previous, “episodes (without real order)”, this series is also a project about beauty and intimacy. Flowers was created in the beginning of the pandemic. Pucci says, “the lockdown came to get me out of a creativity crisis I was going through at the time.” He was inspired by a Hojō Jutsu manual while being isolated in his residence in Paris. He studied the art of Shibari and performed it on cut flowers: calla lilies, anemones, carnations, proteas, roses and tulips were tied with strings like bent and constricted bodies and then photographed. “Tulip 1:15pm” was the first image created for this ongoing series. Hojō Jutsu is the martial art of restraining captives with rope, commonly used on the battlefield by the Empire of Japan from 1400 to 1700, that hundreds of years later it evolved into the refined technique of Shibari (literally “to tie”), the spiritual art...

"Kodak", New York, 2007
By Tina West
Located in Hudson, NY
As if developed from memory, West’s latest collection channels imagery from a familiar past life. Just as the DaDa artists utilized art objects in unconventional forms produced by unconventional methods, West employees coincidence as a means of production. Reminiscent of Josef Sudek’s Still Lifes, West’s images are painterly, presenting themselves as either single entities or still-life constructions and assemblages. Many of her photographs created themselves around the objects – whether fishhooks, a mysterious container or firecrackers—West is able to recall a once-forgotten image as a beautiful snapshot of nostalgia and warmth. A photographer by trade, West considers herself a still-life imagist. A unifying thread of simplicity exists throughout her work – illustrated though her use of a single light source, timeless and seemingly meaningless objects and shadows – a combination that evokes a sense of wonder and awe at the images that seem to have sprung from nothing. From Kansas City, Tina West discovered photography while studying sculpture. Living in New York since 1989, she is a commercial photographer working for clients such as Knopf Books, Vintage Books, Simon & Schuster, Citibank, Atlantic Records, Elle Magazine and Scientific American Magazine. Listing is for UNFRAMED print. Inquire within for framing. Edition 1 of 25. If the exhibition piece is sold or the customer orders a different print size, the photograph is produced upon purchase. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. Please allow two weeks for production. Shipping time depends on method of shipping. Price is subject to availability. The Robin Rice Gallery reserves the right to adjust this price depending on the current edition of the photograph. In her new exhibition Churilla draws from her years spent as a swimmer, lifeguard, and athlete to capture the forgotten freedom and exuberance of days of youth spent on the water. Viva la Vida is a mix of timeless portraits and candid photographs "I’ve always been drawn to the water- now my art, my sense of athleticism, freedom and oasis have merged in a way", says Churilla. Her nod to iconic photographers from the past, such as Edward Weston, and Herbert List, is apparent in her portrait work. In another Christian & Nathan Fletcher is in the midst of a surf crusade off the coast of Islamorada, Florida. Christian pioneered a new revolution in surfing style with his aerial techniques. The artist’s genuine connection to her subjects allows the viewer to forget the presence of a camera and to be drawn into the personal narrative. The invitational image Longboard Afternoon, taken at Ditch Plains, Montauk, focuses on the portrayal of the atmosphere rather than the individual subjects. With a 70’s feel the viewer is intrigued by the layers of life, activity and parallel moments shared by silhouettes of surfers carrying longboards at hazy days end. One such image, Gustavo, depicts a male figure seated poolside with head bowed. The pose and the wet sheen to his hair and skin give the subject a classic, sculptural look. All the photographs exhibited in are in various sizes are printed on heavy weight cotton paper with the traditional glossy baryta surface in rich tones of black and white. Her artist mother, Barbara Churilla, involved her in creating art, sculpture, painting and photography from an early age. She was raised in Princeton, New Jersey. She graduated from School of Visual Arts in NYC with a BFA in Photography. Lynda began her photo assisting career with legendary photographer Bruce Weber. Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty, Kansas City, MO, 2019
By Tina West
Located in Hudson, NY
Tina West + Tucker Robbins 2020 The Robin Rice Gallery is pleased to present a photographic exhibition by Tina West, featuring a special new collaboration between Robin Rice and furniture designer, activist Tucker Robbins. Jessica Kravitz of Exalted Alchemy created an aromatic experience exclusively for the exhibition. The installation was designed by sculpture Amy Pilkington. This is Tina West’s seventh solo exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery and Tucker Robbins’ first collaboration with Robin Rice. Whether woven textile, clay pottery or wood sculpture, these sustainably made products are materials that have been salvaged and refashioned into works of exquisite craftsmanship that are truly one of a kind. Found objects are essential in the installation. Boosting from an impressive visual flow, the installation discovers intersections between the works that can be seen to echo throughout the space. As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka...
