Abstracted portrait of a man in a raincoat by artist John Dobbs. This impressionistic depiction of the subject allows for stylistic references to Monet, and Sisley. John Barnes Dobbs, a determinedly figurative painter who launched his career in the 1950s against the prevailing winds of Abstract Expressionism, lived to see a time when Realism would coexist with Abstraction, Minimalism, Conceptual Art and a variety of other artistic movements. On August 9 Dobbs died at his home in New York’s Greenwich Village at the age of 80. In his final works, Dobbs’ figures appear against flat backgrounds, iconic as the images on tarot cards: acrobats, boxers and contortionists, struggling against the physics of their own bodies and that of the universe. Dobbs had many solo shows at galleries, universities and museums. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, and the Salon Populiste in Paris. Dobbs’ paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC; the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ; the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; the Canton Museum of Art, Canton, OH and the Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, MA. This early 19th-century watercolour by British artist Paul Sandby Munn RWS (1773-1845) depicts a riverside view at Mallevy in North Wales. Amid a hasty world where technology consumes our waking hours, few of us find the time to consider the subtle beauties of quiet watercolours. Yet, during the late 18th century, when Munn began producing his skillfully-rendered views, this style of drawing was considered an act of rebellion. Indeed, to such an extent that, together with several associates, Munn contributed to one of the most vital artistic circles in British history - the “Brothers” sketching club. Held every Saturday, the sketching club sought to raise the status of landscape watercolours from their lowly position as mere copies of nature. Signed 'Todros Geller' (Russian-American, 1889-1949) and dated 1937 An elegant and painterly, southwestern landscape painted when the artist was 48 years old. Born in Vinnytsia, now in the Ukraine, Todros Geller first studied in Odessa before moving to Canada. He continued his studies in Montreal (1906) and, subsequently, at the Art Institute of Chicago with George Bellows and John Norton. Geller exhibited widely and with success including, from 1925, at the Chicago Art Institute as well as at the Riverside Museum (New York, 1939), the New York World's Fair (1939) and at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1941) in addition to other national institutions. Geller was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and his work may be found in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a member of professional associations including the Artist's Union, the Artist's Congress and the Chicago Society of Artists, which he also served as president. During the the 1930's, Geller was an active participant in the Federal Art Project (WPA) in Illinois and his large-scale murals and stained glass windows may be found in Chicago and Detroit as well as Tel-Aviv.
