About the Item

A rare 1980s vintage piece from Emanuel Ungaro when bold, statement accessories were a key part of high fashion. The combination of matte-finish gold plating and pâte de verre glass cabochons suggests a strong influence from both Art Deco and baroque styles, which were often seen in high-end costume jewelry of that era. Given its double-link construction and the use of alternating cabochon settings, the design likely has a substantial and luxurious feel. The belt is substantial measuring 1.63 inches wide and 33.5 inches end to end. The oval signature plaque with “EU” initials and “Paris” marking is an important authenticity feature, as Ungaro’s jewelry was often marked this way. In terms of value, Ungaro’s vintage accessories—especially well-preserved belts—are collectible, particularly among lovers of bold 1980s fashion. Condition-wise, “very good with light wear” suggests it has been well cared for, making it even more desirable. Emanuel Ungaro (13 February 1933 – 21 December 2019) was a renowned French couturier and founder of the fashion house Emanuel Ungaro. He was a student of Balenciaga, an adherent of sensual fashion, he was also the creator of designer costume jewelry. According to "Costume Jewelry for Haute Couture" by Florence Muller, “Ungaro’s couture house was one of the first to give young artist-sculptors a carte blanche to create jewels to accessorize collections." One of those individuals, Oscar Gustin, was responsible for Ungaro’s highly sculptural metal necklaces dating to the late 1960s. In some instances, these metal creations “replace clothes in a very avant-garde vision of femininity,” adds Muller. Many celebrities, TV presenters, judges and simply fashionable women wore his jewelry, wanting to emphasize their style. Besides, he was one of favorite couturiers of Catherine Deneuve and Jacqueline Kennedy.
