About the Item

1920s Irish Lace hand crocheted wedding dress or day dress together with the original silk and lace slip. This beautiful dress features all the finest examples of this art, large scale three dimensional flowers that bloom throughout the design, fine detail work and a well thought out pattern that makes the dress a wearable art piece. Pull on dress in the 1920s flapper style, simple and elegant. The dress features a narrow collar that stands up at the back of the neck and features a flower. Vent neckline, elbow length sleeves and semi A line skirt. The dress has alternating bands from the hip to the hem that show off examples of the lace. I love the center back especially it features a basket of flowers. The original slip is made with large bands of Irish Crochet Lace at the bodice and hem, the center is cream silk, the shoulders are silk ribbons. A beautiful example of the lace that was originally developed in mid-nineteenth century Ireland as a method of imitating expensive Venetian point laces. By 1848 Irish lace making was taught in almost every convent in the country and used as part of Famine Relief Schemes, by 1881, 16,000 women across Ireland were working in this intricate, lace making, cottage industry. In excellent wearable condition, there are some old repairs. 100 years old, dresses of this age always need to be worn with care. All our clothing is dry cleaned or hand washed, inspected for condition and ready to wear. Any condition issues will be noted. For visual comparison our mannequin is a size 4.
