About the Item

Fashion often plays a role in history ... especially this Richard Nixon campaign paper dress designed in 1968 to appeal to young voters who were often tagged as 'Nixonettes'. Paper dresses were a 1960's novelty started by the Scott Paper Company and perfected by Mars of Asheville in order to sell 'disposable fashion' through boutiques and department stores ... Mars even got Andy Warhol in on the fun by commissioning him to paint a white dress which he entitled 'Fragile'. This dress was produced by Mars and features 'NIXON' in red block letters accented with blue stars all on a brown paper bag style background. The original vinyl packaging and a business card from Feeley & Wheeler, the public relations firm who commissioned the design, are included. It is truly a unique piece of Americana and would be a great framed as an addition to a pop art collection. CONDITION The dress is in fairly good condition considering its age ... and the fact that it is paper! There is a hole near the neckline shown in photograph 13 and a couple of spots nearby shown in photograph 12. It was stored for many years in a folded position and has suffered brown outer edges at the fold which is seen as a square shape at the front and as shown in photograph 14. The vinyl case shows some discolorations and wear and shown in photographs 10 and 11. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The dress is marked a size 8 - 10 and 'Tiny' ... it best fits sizes 4 - 8 with attention to bust and shoulder measurements as the body of the dress is tent-like. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4. Bust 34.5" Waist 39" Hips 42" Shoulder Length From Outside Sleeve to Sleeve 13.25" Length From Shoulder to Hem 37.5"
