About the Item

This is a couture made French dress from the 1970s. The label reads La Femme Chic Place de la Basilique, St Quentin. The dress is beautifully made by hand in a classic floral print muslin cotton that is light and floaty. The dress is fully lined in acetate and has very feminine details like billowing sleeves and dainty buttoned cuffs. The scoop neck has an additional overlaid panel to support the shape at the neckline. The skirt has box shaped pleats and retains its original tie belt. Warm yellow, light orange and green floral print on a navy base make this a striking rose print. What is interesting about the roses is that they are graduated in size towards the bottom of the skirt and the sleeves, while a second coordinating swatch of fabric has much smaller flowers and a more abstract look. The whole thing reminds us of something you'd wear in Provence in the summer! It is in absolutely beautiful, barely worn condition with no faults of any note apart from the inside label having a tear. The dress does up at the back with a concealed original French made zip. The dress can be worn by up to size UK 12, US 8 and for those with a dainty waist or a smaller size this would look perfect cinched in with the matching fabric belt. MEASUREMENTS: BUST - 36in. 1970’s Ossie Clark Blue Chiffon Floral Dress With Ceila Birtwell Print
By Ossie Clark

Floaty summer dress from iconic British designer Ossie Clark, for his Radley line. This early to mid 1970’s piece features a pretty floral print in two layers of navy chiffon in a red, sky blue, green & white floral print by his wife and business partner Ceila Birtwell. Fitted around the bust, with a flattering empire line tie fastening and three covered buttons at the back in the same fabric. It would make a fantastic choice for a wedding or summer party and is in truly superb vintage condition with no issues. Best for a size extra small to small - our model is a size UK 6-8 or US 2-4 and this has room in the bust. Ossie Clark was a highly influential British fashion designer in the 1960s -1970s. In 1965 he graduated from the Royal College of Art with a first class degree and immediately began selling his work in exclusive London boutiques including Alice Pollock’s Quorum. Here he created a collection with textile designer Celia Birtwell which was one of the most famous collaborations in fashion history. Quorum was bought by Radley in the late 1960s which led to the ‘Ossie Clark for Radley’ label. Today, his distinctive dresses are highly sought after and admired by celebrities such as Kate Moss, Emma Watson...
