About the Item

Circa 1880-1885 United States Cage dress with turn-up, two-part princess line, whalebone bodice and turn-up skirt in beige and brown silk taffeta. Curved bodice, crew neck and long angled sleeves, fastened at front with pearly buttons. Skirt with large bouillonné over the loins, draped with crenellated pleats at the front and cleverly raised at the back by buttoned river legs. The high point of the cage à grande tournure came around 1885, with such pronounced volume on the loins that the line of the pouf was horizontal, perpendicular to the back. The interplay of matte and shiny materials and the use of false colour co-ordinates were a constant fashion trend in the last third of the 19th century. The bodice is lined in unbleached cotton, with sewn-in ties at the bottom of the loins to lift the skirt and accentuate the bustline. The skirt is lined in glazed chintz with a few tears in the fragile chintz (see last photos). The taffeta is crisp and surprisingly beautiful with no holes or cracks, apart from two or three micro-dirty spots. Condition is good to very good for its age. A collectible piece to display. Dimensions: Equivalent size France 35. Shoulders 39 cm, chest 85 cm, waist 63 cm, arms 59 cm. Skirt approximately 110 cm, hips 129 cm.
