Heavy Black Silk Faille Shirtwaist Circle Dress w Velvet Trim, M-L, late 1940s

About the Item

A testament to how fine clothes *used* to be made, this immaculate day-to-evening shirtwaist dress boasts impeccable craftsmanship like finished buttonholes, hand finishing and luxurious heavyweight fabric. Made to last a lifetime, it offers full adjustability via front and rear waist ties and a 1” seam allowance so it fits beautifully as a woman’s body changes from youth through pregnancy and beyond. Dolman sleeve shirtwaist dress with silk velvet trim at collar and ¾” split turnback cuffs; silk velvet ties and front and rear center waist. Princess seams at front and rear bodice, plus front waist pleats where velvet ties are attached. Off-seam welted pockets both sides. Fully front buttoning with 13 covered buttons with velvet centers; two hook and loop closures at waist, plus additional hidden button beneath collar. Unlined. fabric: silk faille, silk velvet noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: none condition: missing lowest button at hemline; otherwise mint** measurements: collar: 3 ½” at widest shoulders: approx. 16” bust: to 42” bodice length: approx. 15” from shoulder, 5” from underarm sleeve: approx. 17” from shoulder, 11” from underarm sleeve circumference: 16” at upper arm, 11” at forearm waist: 30” max (adjustable due to front and rear waist ties) hips: 54” skirt length: 27” total length: 42” from shoulder; 32” from underarm sweep: 106” hem: 1” label: Hong Shing Expert Ladies’ Tailor (Hong Kong) size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size medium - large *though at its current dimensions the dress best fits a size medium, there is enough seam allowance to accommodate up to a size large if altered. **please note that although there is a buttonhole at the waist, it was originally sewn closed because it would not have allowed the waist ties to close properly if a button had been present.
