About the Item

Each Morphew Collection kaftan is unique. Using our classic fitted/unfitted kaftan pattern we upcycle vintage kimono silks from the 1940s to the 1980s. Many are hand printed or dyed and some even have touches of hand embroidery or touches of metallic gold paint. There is an internal optional elastic waistband which pulls the bodice in to fit the body. This creates a flattering line which fits a very wide array of sizing. Fantastic oversized butterfly sleeves create a softer more fluid line than your run of the mill kaftan. Hand finished and ethically made in the USA. MORPHEW COLLECTION Light Orange Japanese Kimono Silk Navy Blue Trim Kaftan MORPHEW COLLECTION is made entirely by hand in our NYC Ateliér of rare antique materials sourced from around the globe. Our sustainable vintage materials represent over a century of design, many of the rich textiles we use are no longer manufactured. Each piece preserves the hours of hand work and lost artisanal techniques into a contemporary design and fit.

MORPHEW COLLECTION Orange & Blue Multicolored Silk Conversational Print Kaftan
Located in New York, NY
From the Victorian period to the 1950s, 60s & 70s western fashion has been utilizing Indian sari silks in their designs. When speaking with our factory manager in India about sourcing real metal lamé he told us about a collection of antique sari his mother and aunts had in storage. We immediately knew we had to see them. Unlike modern sari and other metallic textiles which are woven with a more cost effective polyester fiber. The vintage sari silk is woven with real metal threads. These looms have to be manned by hand and it is a slow and laborious process which no one wants to resurrect. Each piece is made one at a time, utilizing the borders of the sari to maximum impact. Because many of the textiles are half a century old a few minor imperfections may be present. Think of these as time keepers and story tellers of the colorful Indian weddings and festivals they were worn to in their past lives. The beautiful metallic threads and silks still shine on for years to come. MORPHEW COLLECTION Orange & Blue Multicolored Silk Conversational Print...
