About the Item

Dignified and statuesque, this gown combines the modesty and rigor of a kimono with the body conscious glamour of the 1930s. The high cut asymmetrical bodice and inset obi waist detail keep it demure, but the fluttering batwing sleeves—dripping with tambour beading and Austrian crystals—are the real show-stoppers. Deep brown silk crêpe kimono gown with fixed asymmetrical V bodice, obi-style inset waist and bias skirt; multiple rear neck darts radiate from center back. Bracelet length batwing sleeves embellished with bugle beads and Austrian crystals; open at underarms. Over-the-head construction with no closures except a single snap at point of V neck; unlined. fabric: silk crêpe noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: replaced missing crystals with period-appropriate alternatives; re-dyed fabric where faded condition: good with some fabric stiffness, two areas of faint color inconsistency and light perspiration fading at underarms (concealed by sleeves) measurements: neckline opening: 5 ¾” across (snapped closed) neckline plunge: 3” from shoulder shoulders: approx. 15” bust: 40” capelet sleeve: approx. 19” from shoulder bodice length: 18” from shoulder (not including 3 ½” inset obi waist) waist: 31” hips: 41” skirt length: 41” (including 3 ½” inset obi waist) total length: 50 ½” from underarm; 59” from shoulder sweep: 68” label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size medium
