Child's dress for a boy in taffeta and brocade silks - France Circa 1870

About the Item

Circa 1870 France A child's dress, for a boy (?) around 10 years old (?), reused from older silks dating from the 19th century. The base is a yellow-green edged taffeta with a small sowing, as was the case with many Directoire and First Empire dresses. The appliqué collar and pleated falbalas at the bottom of the skirt are in Droguet Maubois from the Louis XV French period. Straight cut with curved back and volume at the back, naturally reminiscent of a fashion silhouette from the 1880s. Collar and cuffs bubbled with lace, echoed at the bottom of the skirt in pleated tarlatan and bobbin lace. Fully lined with cream taffeta and chintzed cotton, also pre-dating its cut. A precious and rare example of 19th century children's fashion. There is a stain on one sleeve but the silk is clean and not damaged. Very good condition. Dimensions: Child size equivalent to 8-10 years old. Height 79 cm, shoulders 28 cm, chest 63 cm, waist 66 cm, hips 80 cm, sleeves 42 cm.
