About the Item

Innovative French designer France Andrevie designed this gorgeous two piece black dress in tone on tone polka dot and striped silk, with an oversized top and a paneled wrap skirt. The top is covered in large velvet polka dots, and was purchased in a much smaller size than the skirt because of how oversized it is! Andrevie created an incredible top with extra large sleeves and front pocket. It buttons down the front, with a mandarin collar that can be buttoned closed with the two buttons, or worn open. The skirt sits at the natural waist, about where the sleeve underarm starts! The wrap skirt ties at the side, and is made of multiple overlapping panels. Some have velvet polka dots, some have velvet stripes! We estimate this ensemble is from the Fall/Winter 1982 runway show because of this pattern combination, we've found pantsuits and other items with this same velvet dot/stripe combination! Top is marked as a 36, skirt is a 40. Fits like a US size 8/10, and is very adjustable with the fit because of the oversized blouse and the wrap skirt! Top (oversized fit) - BUST: 46" SHOULDERS: 21" LENGTH from shoulder to hem: 26" SLEEVE length from shoulder to cuff: 21" Skirt (adjustable wrap) - WAIST: 30" - 34" HIPS: 40-44" LENGTH: 28" If you haven't heard of her, you might find it interesting to know that France Andrevie was considered to be one of the most experimental, avant garde designers from France in the 1980's, along with Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier and Claude Montana. She was known for her innovative use of fabrics, layering techniques, and her more masculine silhouettes. She inspired many fashion designers and was the favorite designer of many 1980's fashionistas. In 1982, the New York Times described her as follows; "France Andrevie is, like Gaultier, a workaholic. She is her own business manager, accountant, designer and, if need be, shipping clerk. The minuscule blonde, whose layer-upon-layer fashions are gaining her an international reputation, earned her first fame under an alias, Laurent Vicci. But when that name began to receive fashion attention, she decided to declare herself." ''What I have always wanted is a mix of masculine and feminine clothes, I love the simplicity of what men wear and I've tried to reinterpret it in a feminine way, but without the froufrou that the word 'feminine' usually implies.’' France Andrevie One of the reasons you may not have heard about her is that we only were fortunate to have a few seasons of her designs. Sadly, Andrevie died of a heart attack at the age of 34 in 1984, 6 months after giving birth to a son.
