ABOUT MADELEINE VIONNET
Madeleine Vionnet (1876-1975)
Vionnet designed for the Callot Soeurs and Jacques Doucet houses before she opened her own studio in 1912. In the 1920s she created a fashion revolution by introducing the bias cut, a technique for cutting cloth diagonal to the grain of the fabric and allowing the designer to utilize the architectural elements inherent in textiles. The bias cut enables the fabric to cling to the body while moving with the wearer, creating a sleek, flattering, "second skin" look that revolutionized women's clothing. Because of this, Vionnet dominated the haute couture industry in the '30s. Vionnet's designs were actually quite complex and involved cutting, draping, and pinning fabric designs on to a scale doll before recreating the design on life-size models. The bias designs needed fabrics two yards wider than previous straight grain designs in order to accommodate draping. Because of her bias cut clothes, Vionnet dominated haute couture in the 1930s and created the trends that were worn by high profile celebrities like Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Katharine Hepburn. Vionnet was a pioneer in copyright laws in fashion. World War II forced her to close her fashion house in 1939.
Today, Madeleine Vionnet is considered one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century and many designers such as Azzedine Alaia and John Galliano reference her designs as inspiration.
