A Rare Couture Evening Kaftan By Madeleine Chéruit Boulanger Circa 1920/30

Circa 1920/1930 French Haute Couture Rare Collectible Haute Couture coat or kaftan of evening / interior labelled by Chéruit Wormser and Boulanger, 21 place Vendôme Paris. Black wool serge decorated with white and black embroidered seems . Opening under the armpits and split on the side in the very same way of the eastern kaftans. Fastening on the front with the possibility of folding down the two panels to close the coat. Tightened at the waist by a wide belt, sewn in the center of the back, embroidered with black silk threads and attached by two buttons. Bust lining in cream silk pongee which is damaged and split in several places. The black wool is strong with no defaults except two little moths holes at one shoulder. The silk lining near the shoulders is fragile too. Good general condition and color. A collectible piece, Dimensions: Equivalent of a french 36-38 size. height 116 cm, shoulders 35 cm, arms 53 cm, bust 82-84 cm, waist 80 cm, hips 93 cm. You will not find more prestigious label in the early 1920s in Paris for this couture House which will be occupied by Schiaparelli later in 1935. The double function of interior and / or evening coat is a constant in the history of fashion. A trend that will vanish in the 1950s. This coat represents the Parisian chic vision of oriental fashion that was very much in vogue between the two World Wars, mostly in the society balls organized by Paul Poiret. Rare item !

Inspired by 18th century coats, the bottom is made of double black faille fabric covered with a wool felt with large black embroidered perforations. Tubular three-quarter sleeves, wide theatrical folded collar and coat crossing closed in front by hooks. Two side slits allow a felt belt to be passed through to curve the coat in front while freeing the volume at the back ending in a train, in the manner of the French Dresses! Black taffeta lining. No defects. Very good condition of color and conservation.  Dimensions: Equivalent size France 36-38. Front height 163 cm, back height with train 206 cm, shoulders 40 cm, chest 90 cm, waist 76-80 cm, sleeves 46 cm, hips 86-90 cm. Givenchy is part of one of the most famous French fashion house. Hubert de Givenchy, who worked with Elsa Schiaparelli, founded it in 1952. An admirer of Cristobal Balenciaga, he set up shop next to his master friend on Avenue Georges V in Paris in 1969.
