Salmon silk moire dinner dress with large Mutton sleeves - France Circa 1835

Salmon pink silk moire dinner dress with large gigot sleeves tightened over the forearms and dating from the most extravagant of the Romantic period. The bodice is fitted at the neck and closed at the back with brass hooks, with flat pleats criss-crossing the front to emphasise the bust. Round skirt with flat pleats at the front and pleats at the back to create a round silhouette. The bodice is lined with striped cotton. The eccentric sleeves had to be fitted with feather pads to maintain their volume. The waistband was wide and had to be embellished with a belt or a wide silk ribbon as an accessory. The skirt had no lining in this model. A precious piece of evidence, this dress has many frailties in the silk, with small cuts and micro spots of rust. This model is very rarely found in museums, as this fashion for oversized sleeves did not last very long. Poor condition. Price accordingly.

Composed of a pair of Bermuda shorts, a tunic-dress made of stretchy ribbed knitwear in lemon-yellow and a bolero with quilted fins in iridescent silver foil called Papier Fou.
