About the Item

From its rare beads to its scalloped hem to its wearable size, this Jazz Age gem is a “unicorn” among flapper dresses. Quite literally dripping with silver-plate hollow beads and crystals, it would have been a more refined—and old-money—version of the gowns Fitzgerald’s “bright young things” wore in the Plaza Fountain. Sleeveless flapper dress with round front and rear neckline and dropped sash bow at left hip. Embellished all over with silver-plate hollow beads and crystal seed and bugle beads in an arabesque fern pattern; 6-string fringe of clear crystal seed beads hang from hip bow. Scalloped hemline trimmed in matching beads and crystals. Pullover construction with no closures of any kind; unlined. fabric: silk crêpe noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: completely restored with repairs to all seams, securing of all beads and replacement of missing embellishment with age-appropriate matches; one very small (3 mm) loss in fabric at rear right hip (see photo) condition: very good measurements: neckline opening: 9” across shoulders: 15” from outer shoulder edge to edge bust: to 40” waist: 40” hips: 40” length: 44” from shoulder, 36” from underarm sweep: 51” bow: 3 ½”wide x 9” long, not including 6 ½” beaded fringe label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size medium

Dignified and statuesque, this gown combines the modesty and rigor of a kimono with the body conscious glamour of the 1930s. The high cut asymmetrical bodice and inset obi waist detail keep it demure, but the fluttering batwing sleeves—dripping with tambour beading and Austrian crystals—are the real show-stoppers.
