Vintage David Hayes Black Cocktail Dress
About the Item
This timeless vintage little black party dress was made by David Hayes in the late 1980s/early 1990s. David Hayes was a Los Angeles designer very active during the 80s and 90s who famously rebelled against the fashion status quo of his era, celebrating women and their inherent femininity. At the same time, he insisted on using old-fashion, labor-intensive tailoring techniques, and never cut corners, using expensive trims and linings. It's made of beautiful silk crepe, with a sarong-style draped skirt accented with a beautifully draped rosette at the asymmetrical waistline. Darts in the bodice provide shape, and there are light shoulder pads offsetting the 3/4 length sleeves. The craftsmanship is evident: it's beautifully lined on the interior, with hand-finished details. Closes in the back with a hidden zipper and single button. Note that the exact fiber contents are not listed.
Measurements: This will best fit a modern size Medium, or possibly Large; Shown unclipped on a size Small and it's a bit oversized, but it still works. Please refer to below measurements to ensure a proper fit.

David Hayes
David Hayes was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and received an A.B. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and a MFA degree from Indiana University in 1955, where he studied with David Smith. He has received a postdoctoral Fulbright award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is a recipient of the Logan Prize for Sculpture and an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He has had over 300 exhibitions and is included in over 100 institutional collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 2007 was conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Albertus Magnus College. He worked in Coventry, Connecticut, and died April 9, 2013 of leukemia at the age of 82, four days after his final opening.
