About the Item

This intricately crafted, extraordinarily detailed jacket dates back to the late-Victorian / early Edwardian era of the 1900s. This piece is a wonderful example of soutache work. Originating in France, soutache dates back to the 15th century but gained renewed popularity during the Victorian era. This jacket was created by Dublin and Cork based costume and mantle shop, Forest & Sons Ltd. This jacket is tailored to a robe style, with a decadent, wide spread silk collar that hangs down the rear of the jacket. The back of the collar finishes in a point, and is trimmed with a braided tassel finished with a long fringe. The fabric is highly detailed; black silk topped with net and finished with criss-crossing, spiraling and intertwined soutache work. It has an elongated silhouette and falls with a straight cut to ankle length - a decadent cover-up atop a piece of evening-wear. The front of this jacket is secured with a large braid-adorned button. This wonderfully preserved piece of history would make a beautiful addition for a fine costume enthusiast and collector. Its the finest soutache example Circa has ever had in the collection. This piece is in very fine antique condition, particularly for a piece of over 120 years of age with no issues of any note. The size is unlabelled so please check the measurements below carefully as the fabric has no stretch. We believe this would best fit up to a UK 10, US 6 and sizes smaller. MEASUREMENTS BUST - 36 in.
