About the Item

This incredible vintage Irene suit is so beautifully made and the stripes of the fabric line up perfectly! The intricate, subtle detailing helps you see why Irene suits were so popular and why they are still collectible today. This ensemble .was acquired from the granddaughter of Terry Mantz, the wife of Paul Mantz. Mantz was a very famous early Hollywood stunt pilot. Howard Hughes was among his first clients and in 1937, a few months before she vanished over the western Pacific Ocean, Amelia Earhart asked him to train her in long-distance flying and navigation. Mantz accompanied Earhart as a co-pilot on the aborted first attempt of her world flight. He was in over 50 films from 1930 until his death on the set of The Flight of the Phoenix in 1965. The Mantz family lived a glamorous life in Hollywood and Terry's granddaughter told us wonderful stories about shopping with her at Bullocks Wilshire in the Irene Salon, which was the first boutique dedicated to a single designer inside a major U.S. department store. We have 3 Irene suits from this very interesting woman, and this one is from the early 1960's. The other two are from the 1940's and 1950's. This beautiful suit has a skirt and blazer/jacket with 3/4 length sleeve length. There are 3 large button fastenings in the center front opening with very unique buttonholes. The shoulders are structured with shoulder pads and the neckline is square. The skirt has front pleats and back darts along the waistband. There is a side metal zipper with hook-and-eye closure. The back of the skirt has a small slit with a panel of fabric. This suit is fully lined in black silk. There are no fabric content or size labels, but it feels like a cotton/silk blend. We estimate this would best fit a modern size 8.
