1950s Gucci Dome Top Monogram Leather Wood Travel Trunk
By Gucci
Located in London, GB
This rare Gucci mini trunk embodies the refined craftsmanship and aristocratic sensibility of the House of Gucci during its formative decades. Crafted in Italy, likely in Florence, during the 1950s–1960s, this dome-top travel piece features: v Gucci’s early interlocking “G” monogram canvas v Solid wood frame with rounded lid construction v Hand-applied leather straps with brass buckle hardware v Original functional top handle and latch closure v A form once used for vanity or hat trunk purposes Each detail reflects Gucci’s early dedication to equestrian-influenced luxury travel goods, long before the brand’s global expansion. This piece stands as a rare survivor of an era when travel was an art form — and luggage was crafted to last a lifetime. v Provenance: Private Collection in Rome, Italy v Condition: Very good vintage condition with light, era-appropriate patina v Dimensions: Approx. 13.5 in (H) × 12 in (W) × 7 in (D) v Shape and mechanism: The flip lever clasp (a “bayonet” or “press” type closure) was very common in leather goods and travel trunks before combination or logo-engraved locks became widespread. v Material and Finish: The antiqued burnished brass/golden metal you have (without any engraved logo) is consistent with Gucci products from the pre-serial logo period. In the 1970s, Gucci began adopting visible logos on hardware (GG, Italy, etc.). v Estimated era of the clasp: 1950s – early 1960s v Absence of branding on the clasp: Typical of handcrafted or bespoke items from the ’50s-’60s, when attention to detail outweighed the need to brand every element Historical comparison: v From the 1930s to ’50s, Gucci used imported accessories or locally produced parts by Florentine artisans, often with locks like carriage trunks...
