About the Item

Type: Sugar tongs, table tongs Materials: vermeille silver Period: Napoleon III Country: France Minor flaws that do not interfere with the overall view of the whole. Dimensions: 16 x 5 x 3 cm Curious sugar tongs or table tongs made of vermeille silver with a lion claw tip. The arms feature flirtatious flower decorations, and the crown piece in a small acorn at the nexus of the two. About vermeil: Simply put, vermeil refers to a variety of metal coated in gold. For the metal to be considered vermeil, it must meet three main commercial criteria: The base metal must be sterling silver (92.5%) or fine (99.9%), which is why vermeil is also known by its other names, gilt silver or gold-plated silver; the purity of the gold must be at least 10 carats; and the thickness of the gold layer must be a minimum of 2.5 microns (0.0025 millimeters). If these three criteria are not met, then the metal would be classified as “gold filled” or gold plated. Gold vermeille is also found in other colors such as rose gold or white gold. While gold vermeille is popularly used in jewelry, it is a versatile metal and has other uses as well. It is commonly used in home accessories and furniture, and even in sports trophies and gold medals.
