Dan Namingha Art
Amérindien, b. 1950
Le peintre et sculpteur Dan Namingha est l'un des principaux artistes amérindiens contemporains qui exercent aujourd'hui. Un esprit Revere pour la nature et la Lande est au cœur de ses créations, alors qu'il célèbre la vie et les traditions de son héritage Hopi. Les influences artistiques sur ses œuvres dynamiques minimalistes comprennent Jackson Pollock, Michelangelo et Norman Rockwell.
Namingha est né à Keams Canyon, en Arizona. Il est membre de la tribu Hopi-Tewa, une nation indigène connue pour son art vivant, en particulier la poterie. Il est issu d'une longue lignée d'artistes et de potiers. Sa mère est Dextra Quotskuyva, l'une des potières les plus influentes du siècle dernier. Son arrière-arrière-grand-mère est Nampeyo, considérée comme la marraine de la poterie hopi.
Namingha a étudié à l'Institut des arts amérindiens à Sante Fe, qui lui a décerné un doctorat honorifique en 2009. Il a également fréquenté l'American Academy of Art à Chicago.
En 1992, il a fait l'objet d'un documentaire de la chaîne PBS intitulé Dan Namingha : Seeking Center in Two Worlds. Il a reçu de nombreuses récompenses prestigieuses, notamment le prix et l'hommage de la Fondation Harvard au Fogg Art Museum de Cambridge, Massachusetts, en 1994, le prix Visionary de l'Institute of American Indian Arts de Sante Fe en 1997 et le prix Abbott Sekaquaptewa de l'association Futures for Children en 2008.
Parmi les grandes collections et les musées qui conservent ses œuvres, citons le Booth Western Art Museum à Atlanta, le Náprstek Museum à Prague, la Royal Collection à Londres et la NASA Art Collection à Washington, DC.
Namingha vit et travaille à Santa Fe, au Nouveau-Mexique, où il continue à créer des œuvres qui inspirent les spectateurs, les collectionneurs et les critiques.
