Elegant Calacatta Venato Marble Font from Italy

About

This beautiful holy water font comes from Italy and is made from Calacatta Venato marble. It has molten lead inserts along the top to show where the hooks would have held a cover. The basin has eight shaped panels beneath an upper scalloped molding. At the high points of the scallops are well carved petals of stylized fleur-de-lys. Palmettes arise from the font’s base directly in line with these petals. Beneath this is a baluster style center post with gadrooned lobes of stylized acanthus leaves. All this rests upon an octagonal plinth having more carved fleur-de-lys petals. Today, a piece like this could be used again in chapels or private chapels. They are also often used as standalone pieces of sculptural art, fountain basins, jardinières for beautiful plants or flowers.
