About the Item

An incredibly rare antique glazed stoneware bath tub manufactured by Twyfords in the 1890s. This fantastic piece of English sanitaryware history is one of two similar Twyfords baths we have for sale ex. the Simon Kirby Museum of Bathroom Sanitaryware. Prior to entering Kirby’s private collection, this antique bath was previously situated in Somerset House, London; formerly a Tudor palace belonging to the Duke of Somerset. Crafted from fire clay, this large antique bath tub features an off-white coloured glaze to the exterior, decorated with ornate cane coloured swag embellishments; a rare find, as baths like these manufactured by Twyfords normally had plain exteriors. It is elevated by four original matching glazed stoneware feet and is gloriously deep, a teak wood rail to the front edge aiding access into and out of the curved tub. Once restored and functioning, this antique bath will make an exceptional heritage piece for a period bathroom, offering a rare opportunity to purchase a true antique of English sanitaryware history. Find out more about Simon Kirby’s outstanding collection here. CONDITION REPORT For restoration. Good structural condition. Two tap holes present but no taps. No splashback. Transports as 5 pieces. Antique Twyfords Sink with Cast Iron Stand
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An antique Twyfords marbleised sink with a BICLAM cast iron stand from the Simon Kirby Museum of Bathroom Sanitaryware. Dating to circa 1883, this original Victorian sink would make a beautiful addition to a vintage bathroom or period style cloakroom. This sink sees a marbleised basin with a shaped splash back, decorative recessed soap dishes and clam shell overflow above an ornately cast iron standing bracket in a vibrant mustard colour, showcasing a centurion design to either side. The Simon Kirby Museum of Bathroom Sanitaryware Sanitaryware extraordinaire and enthusiast Simon Kirby was the proud owner of a rare and impressive collection of antique toilets, basins and baths. Until 2016 Kirby was the managing director of Thomas Crapper & Co; he spent more than 40 years carefully sourcing these specialist pieces, making it his vocation to ensure such rare and valuable sanitaryware was saved and preserved, creating what was known as the Thomas Crapper Museum. Over the years, the company museum has not been open to the public, with only a few history enthusiasts and keen customers having been invited to view. Names such as Thomas Crapper, George Jennings, Shanks, Doulton and Co and Twyfords form part of this outstanding collection that demonstrates the development of sanitaryware over the centuries. Although Kirby sold the iconic Thomas Crapper company nearly ten years ago, he remains an expert in the history of the ‘smallest room’ and now serves as a consultant to the Royal Household.
