About the Item

This is an old Japanese sliding door covered with corrugated tin. It was crafted sometime between the Meiji and Taisho periods (1860s–1920s), and such architectural fixtures have become increasingly rare in modern times. The wooden frame is made of sugi (Japanese cedar), which conveys a sense of lightness and softness. Onto this framework, tin panels—considered a cutting-edge material at the time—were carefully applied to enhance resistance against wind and rain. What truly stands out is the way the tin is arranged. The delicately angled lattice pattern evokes a kikkō (tortoiseshell) motif, quietly showcasing a refined sense of craftsmanship. A material originally intended simply for waterproofing has here been elevated to the realm of design. Even more impressively, despite being over a century old, the door remains in remarkably good condition. The patina of rust and the soft dullness of the surface beautifully harmonize as marks of aging, adding to its charm. Weighing approximately 21 kg, the door is relatively lightweight and easy to handle. It remains fully functional and can still be used as a sliding door today. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is ready for immediate use upon arrival. Weight: 21 kg __________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
