18th Century French Fireback / Backsplash with Pillars and Fleurs de Lys
About the Item
18th century French Louis XIV fireback with pillars and Fleurs de Lys. The Fleurs de Lys (lilies) were partially truncated after the French Revolution as Fleurs de Lys symbolized royalty and aristocracy throughout Europe. The pillars stand for the club of Hercules and symbolize strength and the unknown. The date of production, 1753, is also cast in the fireback. The Monogram IHS stands for Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jezus the Savior of Humanity) or In Hoc Signo (In this sign will you win).
The fireback has a black / pewter patina and is made of cast iron. The condition is good, no cracks.
