About the Item

19th Century, French Gilt Bronze Fireplace Fender Initials "B.d." on the back Dimensions: W 112 x H 26 x D 7. Maximum W 128 cm This refined fireplace fender was made in France in the early 19th century, in finely chiselled and gilt bronze. The fender, which is extendable, is composed of two end elements with cubic plinth bases. The front is decorated with finely chiselled motifs: a cornucopia overflowing with a composition of flowers and fruits, a dolphin with an upturned, sinuous tail, and flowering vegetation. Above this, a moulded and protruding frame surrounds a base on which rests a vertical circular element, richly adorned with a garland of flowers and fruits centered by a cherub and a rose. The two plinths are connected by a smooth and moulded crossbar that supports a balustrade finely decorated with pierced bronze elements featuring phytomorphic scrolls, volutes, and large circular floral motifs. This refined and unusual openwork design—requiring great technical skill—adds airiness and lightness to the piece. The balustrade is crowned by a smooth cornice that curves gently at the center. Above are two additional circular elements, each decorated with cornucopias filled with flowers and fruits. On the back of these elements is a horizontal iron rod with gilt bronze finials shaped like pinecones. This rod was used to assist in placing wood into the fireplace, as it could rotate thanks to an elegant mechanism. The fireplace fender is both decorative and functional, designed to be placed in front of the hearth. It was widely used in aristocratic and bourgeois homes between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as a symbol of wealth and refinement. Even today, this fender can be placed in front of or above a fireplace, or displayed as a sophisticated sculptural piece, enhancing the interior with its charm, decorative impact, and golden luminosity. Note: Some screws were replaced with copper rivets during the 19th century.

20th Century, Italian Bronze Planter or Gueridon
Located in IT
20th century, Italian bronze planter or Gueridon Measures: cm W 56 x maximum diameter 51 x H 90. H on the floor of the wide 81 cm This refined planter was made in Italy, in Naples, towards the Early 20th Century in the style of «Retour d'Egypte». It consists of a tripod structure in finely chiselled gilded bronze and lacquered in tones. Each leg originates with scroll decorations and phytomorphic elements with golden details, supported by a sphinx with hairstyle, tail and golden wings. This sits on a curvilinear and wavy element decorated with golden ramage and a man’s head with a long beard of classic taste. The legs end with an injured foot and rest on a tripartite base that connects them. In the middle of each leg there is a bronze junction with curls and volutes that converges towards the others in the center, where a vertical element contributes to the momentum and gracefulness of the whole. The basin of the planter is in lacquered tin, with gold edges and reserves. The rising part of the tub has some holes that allow the breathability of the space. This tripod is inspired, with variations, to a famous model of the brothers Luigi and Antonio Manfredini, active in Milan at the beginning of the nineteenth century, financed by the viceroy of Italy Eugenio de Beauharnais, adopted son of Napoleon Bonaparte, for the opening of the real manufacture of Eugenia. The Retour d'Egypte style was widely echoed in France and Europe and originated from General Bonaparte’s military campaign in Egypt in 1799. The fashion of the Egyptians had already in Italy found a previous interpreter in the engraver Giovan Battista Piranesi, but the vast diffusion that also had in the furniture the Egyptian ornament...
