About the Item

Add luxurious elegant sophistication and opulence with this visually striking Belle Époque period (1871-1914) freestanding carved gilt wood French fireplace screen. Late 19th / early 20th century, France, almost certainly Parisian work, executed in Neoclassical influenced decadent 18th century King Louis 16th taste, featuring a brillant gilded wood frame surmounted with pierced floral wreath crest, embellished with ornate molding, flowering fiolated ribbon garlands and draped swag reliefs, centering a beautiful raised pattern chenille textile, with plain torn burlap backing, rising on molded trestle base, terminating in acanthus topped fluted bullet feet. Dimensions: (approx) 42" Tall, 30" Wide, 15.75" Deep History: Both functional & decorative, the fire screen began as a form of furniture that acted as a shield between the occupants of a room and the fireplace, at the time the primary way to heat a home, its primary function was to reduce the discomfort of excessive heat from a log fire. Its secondary function was to protect the room and occupants from flying embers that may be emitted by the fire. When nothing was burning inside the fireplace and the massive hearth empty, fire screens were placed in front to make it look more elegant and decorative. Condition: Overall good antique condition, especially considering its age. Attractive appearance, with bright lustrous gold sheen and dark warm rich patina. Mildly distressed, with desirable scattered exposed gesso and burnished gilded finish. Old gilt touchups, nicks, chips & losses throughout. All wear commensurate with age & use. Heavily torn burlap backside. Overall nothing that detracts from the display or functionality but only adds to the authenticity. Sure to add sophisticated antique character, charm, romantic warmth and rich historical depth to any space! Period French Louis XVI Giltwood Firescreen, circa 1780
Located in Dallas, TX
This Louis XVI period giltwood firescreen is a rather unique find. Typically firescreens from this period (the late 1700’s) were produced with a tapestry or needlepoint body; this particular piece has a solid colored (gold) silk upholstery screen which meshes well with the giltwood frame. Firescreens were used during warmer months to cover the opening of the fireplace. The detachable crest (which can be removed to replace or reupholster the screen) has bell shaped finials on the shoulders that are connected by a raised carving. These elements are surrounded by slightly spiral gadrooning. Beneath the crest is a repeating laurel leaf motif that runs all the way around the border. The ornamentation is double sided.
