French Louis XVI Style Antique Giltwood Fireplace Screen

About the Item

Add luxurious elegant sophistication and opulence with this visually striking Belle Époque period (1871-1914) freestanding carved gilt wood French fireplace screen. Late 19th / early 20th century, France, almost certainly Parisian work, executed in Neoclassical influenced decadent 18th century King Louis 16th taste, featuring a brillant gilded wood frame surmounted with pierced floral wreath crest, embellished with ornate molding, flowering fiolated ribbon garlands and draped swag reliefs, centering a beautiful raised pattern chenille textile, with plain torn burlap backing, rising on molded trestle base, terminating in acanthus topped fluted bullet feet. Dimensions: (approx) 42" Tall, 30" Wide, 15.75" Deep History: Both functional & decorative, the fire screen began as a form of furniture that acted as a shield between the occupants of a room and the fireplace, at the time the primary way to heat a home, its primary function was to reduce the discomfort of excessive heat from a log fire. Its secondary function was to protect the room and occupants from flying embers that may be emitted by the fire. When nothing was burning inside the fireplace and the massive hearth empty, fire screens were placed in front to make it look more elegant and decorative. Condition: Overall good antique condition, especially considering its age. Attractive appearance, with bright lustrous gold sheen and dark warm rich patina. Mildly distressed, with desirable scattered exposed gesso and burnished gilded finish. Old gilt touchups, nicks, chips & losses throughout. All wear commensurate with age & use. Heavily torn burlap backside. Overall nothing that detracts from the display or functionality but only adds to the authenticity. Sure to add sophisticated antique character, charm, romantic warmth and rich historical depth to any space! By François Linke, Claude Michel Clodion, Jean-Henri Riesener
Located in Forney, TX
A striking French antique Louis XVI style gilt bronze mounted writing table made after the model by cabinetmaker to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinetteean, important ébéniste Jean-Henri Riesener (German/French, 1734-1806) and later reproduced by Francois Linke (French, 1855-1946). Signed bronze mounts, Marco. Born in France in the early 19th century, possibly during the late 18th century Louis XVI period, most likely Parisian work, exquisitely hand-crafted in several woods of contrasting colors including walnut and mahogany to create fine wooden inlays and parquetry detailing. The centered front bronze panel disguises a single frieze drawer with dovetail joinery and original key, flanked by gilded bronze foliate mounted rounded corners, a simulated panel drawer to the reverse, embellished on all four sides by intricate finely chiseled, chased and sculpted scrolling laurel ribbon and garland swag ormolu mounts, patinated brass running ornamentation, rising elegantly on four bronze dore ring mounted straight tapering fluted legs, terminating in patinated bronze toupie feet sabots.
