About the Item
This Neo-Gothic marble mantel was reclaimed from a NYC townhouse in the Upper West Side near Central Park. This striking mantel draws clear inspiration from medieval churches and the romantic imagery of chivalry. Its design centers on a beautifully balanced upper panel, divided into three sections with miniature Gothic columns. On each side, sculpted figures stand in recessed niches beneath trefoil arches, reminiscent of saints, scholars, or symbolic figures dressed in flowing ecclesiastical robes. At the center, a detailed panel of quatrefoil tracery frames a heraldic shield, surrounded by leafy carvings that evoke themes of nobility and heritage.
Below, the arched firebox opening is flanked by delicate foliate carvings and topped with a sculpted keystone—perhaps a leafy boss or subtle grotesque. Small rosettes punctuate the sides of the opening, tying the decorative elements together. Framed by slender engaged columns and topped with a deep cornice, the overall structure has a strong vertical rhythm, echoing the soaring architecture of a Gothic cathedral façade.
This mantel would have been a statement piece in a 19th century interior. It has been carefully removed and is exceptionally well preserved. Please note, this item is located in our Scranton, PA location.
