About the Item

A rare and beautiful Coadestone fireplace, circa 1790 from Capesthorne in Cheshire. After a fire and rebuilding, the fireplace was taken there in the 1860s from the family's house in Belgrave Square. Belgrave Square post-dates the fireplace by about 40 years so it is quite possible that this fireplace was in the original Georgian Capesthorne. The frieze with classical figures to centre, the end blockings with finely cast dove. The jambs with classical figures and winged Putti masks and drapery below. The shelf with Lion's masks, egg and dart moulding and stiff acanthus leaves. The plinth block engraved with "Coade, London. 1790". A very rare piece. Shelf width - 2254 mm 88 ¾ in Overall height - 1632 mm 64 ¼ in Opening height - 1149 mm 45 ¼ in Opening width - 1022 mm 40 ¼ in Depth of shelf - 229 mm 9 in.

Late 18th Century Statuary and Sienna Marble Fireplace
Located in London, GB
Provenance: 32 Belgrave Square, thought to have been installed by David Hicks. A late 18th century style chimneypiece in Statuary and Siena marbles of truly exceptional quality. The moulded shelf, carved with dentils and Egg & Dart, breaks forward above the central tablet and square corner blocks. The tablet depicts a scene of Bacchic putti dancing and revelling with music, some holding grapes and ewers of wine, one holding a Thrysus, a spear headed by an acorn often carried by Bacchus, to the right a putto has the legs of a goat, and centred with a putto riding a finely carved ram. The tablet flanked by a frieze decorated by alternating finger flutes inlaid with Siena, and carved finely carved bows and flowers. The cornerblocks, carved to the front with Roman urns, sit above composite Ionic columns, also inlaid with Siena flutes. The columns are fully detached in the round, on turned socle plinths above square footblocks. The convent Siena is of particularly noteworthy quality. The Ram is emblematic in classical and Georgian sculpture...
