About the Item

Crafted in the early 20th century, this fireplace in oak and blue stoneware is a creation by the Parisian firm Gentil & Bourdet, founded in 1904. The stoneware panels framing the hearth feature prominent Egyptian scarabs in high relief, interwoven with stylized foliage. The tapering overmantel, reminiscent of a pyramid, is faced with plain blue stoneware tiles. At the center of the frieze, a floral medallion is flanked by a knotted rope motif on each side, reinforcing the piece’s symbolic and exotic character. This fireplace exemplifies the innovative design language of Gentil & Bourdet, whose work bridged the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Renowned for their use of glazed stoneware in architectural ornamentation, the firm’s pieces were widely adopted in buildings across France. This model was exhibited in the furniture section of the 1904 Salon de l’Art Décoratif, organized by the Société des Artistes Français. Critic Gustave Soulier noted the piece in the Revue mensuelle d’Art contemporain, writing: “Messrs. Gentil and Bourdet made excellent use of stoneware in the two fireplaces they presented” (p. 14).

This exceptional Art Nouveau style pine and burr paneled room is beautifully carved and decorated with blue-green ceramics. Panels with elegant curved and sober lines are covering the bottom of the walls and harmonize the room to its center; a fireplace and its monumental over mantel mirror carved in walnut wood. The mirror is framed by a dynamic and undulating foliage, a pattern we can also find inside the fireplace in green enameled ceramic, which is highlighting the wood texture. The large overmantel mirror sumptuously raises the space of the chimney, structured with two consoles allowing to place lamps. Two distinct doors are also part of the composition, both surmounted by a small carved wood overmantel...
