About the Item

A very large and Majestic ornately detailed antique 19th century Victorian cast iron fire grate in the Gothic-Revival manner. The large Doric arched backplate centred with an Heraldic Plaque displaying a Phoenix crest on the mantel and a halted shield with a three closed raven charge flanked by two female griffin supporters, hosted in turn by a scrolled benderole with the Latin motto "Conscie" meaning, positive and masculine. The three barred grate with a pair of cushion spacers to the bottom bar, with a pair of massive proudly standing bulbous andirons with orbed finials and female masks to the scrolled foot bases. In heraldry, the griffin's amalgamation of lions and eagle gains courage and boldness, and is always drawn to powerful fierce monsters. It is also used to denote strength and military courage and leadership.....The female griffin- with wings is more commonly used in heraldry. English mid-19th century, circa 1850.
