A Late 18th Century North Italian Chimneypiece, Carved in Bleu Turquin Marble with Statuary Details The simple shelf rests on the frieze centred by a tablet, which depicts a laurel garland. The foliage continues through the frieze, ending in paterae corner blocks. The jambs in the shape of fluted and stopped pedestals. The style of this chimneypiece can confidently be attributed to the North Italian region of Piedmont, where the style for furniture and interiors could be considered French due to its proximity to the neighbouring country. Especially during the 1770s, Piedmont produced exquisite elegant pieces of furniture including chimneypieces in a distinguished Neoclassical style that was heavily influenced by the French ornamental compositions.
